hi lads first post on this site was just wondering if i had two sb900,s behind the subject shoot onto white background to blow it out, and one or two sb900s in in front of subject with say a ezybox or umberlla would i get a good studio effect. would this work for say a family of four thanks

Yes, that would do it - standard routine is two on the backrgound, and one as the main front light.
Using top end hot shoe guns is an expensive route, which people only go down because they already have the guns for other work. If it's just for studio photography, then it can be done much more cheaply with basic manual guns like the Yongnuos, or entry-level mains studio heads will also do it more cheaply, and be easier to use (modelling light, fast recycling).

No. Not really. When you go that route, you disable CLS and fire them via radio triggers, which are manual only unless you pay a few hundred for a TTL system (Pocket Wizards or Radio Poppers). Yongnuo RF-602 are favourite triggers, about £30 for a transmitter and reciever, and then another £20 or so for additional receivers. The basic YN guns are only about £50. Check out ebay or Amazon.
Most people prefer manual working for this kind of thing anyway, plus with radio you always get reliable triggering at any distance, regardless of bright ambient light (eg sun) or positioning. Another advantage is that when you go radio you can hook up any combination of cheap manual guns, with CLS flashes (in manual) and studio heads. It's all just light at the end of the day, and provided there's enough of it, and you can control it, you're in business.
