Following on from this thread, where I asked for suggestions for new lighting videos, we have now arranged a shoot for Friday 19th September at the Lencarta studio.

Kick off is at 12 noon and we will probably finish at about 5.30.
This will NOT be an instructional day, I will be pretty fully involved with photographing the model in a variety of ways, including on a white background :( and of course it's mainly going to be about producing a few videos covering the various subjects, so I'm not going to have a lot of time available to explain things. But it should still be useful because it will show my approaches to various lighting challenges - not of course that my own approaches are necessarily the only ones that work.

If anyone wants to come along and watch, they will be very welcome.

Thanks for the offer Garry but unable to attend...:(

I'm a maybe for this Garry.

I've sent a PM to the people who are interested, we probably have room for 1 or 2 more, although we probably definitely won't have enough chairs to sit on because we'll be using our settee for some of the shots:)

Cheers Garry

I'm still planning on attending so hope to see you Friday.

I'll pack a chair.

Although I've a mental week at work, it'll take some effort to get sorted by Friday morning.

Sorry Garry, I'm not going to make it, I've been called to a meeting tomorrow lunch, and with the best will in the world I'd not get there till mid afternoon.

Bit gutted, and I was bringing you a pressure too.

That's a shame Phil - was looking forward to meeting you at last!

I'm still OK for tomorrow but it might be a little after 12 when I get there - depends on how the AM meeting goes!

Well, 3 people came along, I hope they found it useful.
Certainly they will have seen that my approach to lighting is... unconventional.

We will get a few videos out of this, on the following subjects
1. Lighting with a white background BEHIND the subject
2. As above but full length, i.e. floor lit too
3. Lighting for muscle definition, which I also used for some fairly extreme glamour lighting
4.Feathering a softbox
5. Posing the model.

It will take a while for the video footage to get sorted out and edited.
Meanwhile, I've taken the quickest of looks at my stills and should have some to post here in a few days - but right now the weekend is coming up, and that takes priority - work hard, play hard.

Hi Garry

Thanks for this afternoon - interesting, informative and great to see how you work and also Lencarta Towers!

Great to meet Nick and Stuart as well as the excellent model Kiera (hope I've spelt her name correctly!)

Adrian

Had a great time this afternoon Garry. A very interesting approach with your lighting skills. Cannot wait to try out some of your ideas. Good to put a face to two members on here Stuart and Adrian.

Thanks Nick.

Crap afternoon at work, not happy that I had to miss this, if only for the fancy coffee.

Well, Lencarta "Towers" is based on organised chaos - very busy, not exactly a low pressure place to work, but despite my own involvement, fairly efficient. I chose today for the shoot because Friday is the quietest day.
Keira is a good model, and I like working with her because I know that she will always turn up, look good, do exactly what is expected of her and will do everything she can to make the day a success - but this is no more than the normal required standard, and the reason why I don't bother with inexperienced models and with wannabe's who do TFP - you get what you pay for in this world and a capable model makes an enormous contribution to the shoot. People who shoot models should just put their hands in their pockets and hire a decent pro, it's money well spent.

Bl00dy hell - Garry gives you coffee as well! Hope work wasn't that bad!

Thanks for today, it was very informative and for me good to see how to interact with a model, who was an absolute star. As you said it is just so much easier with a professional, especially coming from my novice point of view. Great to meet a couple of members off here too and have a chat.

:)

Unfortunately we couldn't be generous with coffee, the delivery of coffee pods that should have arrived on Thursday (but didn't) saw to that:)
There was enough for me though, just...

The first of the tutorials has now been published, How to feather a softbox
I've kept it very simple and basic, like all tutorials it could cover every possible variation and go into a lot more detail but I'd only confuse myself if I did that.
More tutorials to follow on the other subjects covered, and I'm told that we'll be publishing the first video, about how to light a white background, later today.

Excellent tutorial Garry. Simple and informative. Thanks again for the invite.

You're welcome:)

Here's the first video from that day. Again, it's all about the principles involved, I could have made it much more detailed but the trend is for short videos, people won't watch long ones.
No doubt I'll now be castigated for photographing a woman wearing bra and knickers...

Very well made video, Garry. Well made, straight to the point, no nonsense and finally somebody who knows what he is talking about. There are too many videos/tutorials around where people repeat the same nonsense time and time again.

I'll be definitely looking forward to more videos like that.

Thanks.

thanks for that Gary it's the first tutorial iv'e watched that mentions the ratio difference needed for digital cameras every other i have watched always seem to stick to the 2 stop rule for lighting a white background.

a good tutorial which makes a lot of sense

Good tutorial! Like the fact you show what happens if you do it wrong, this stuff is always helpful.

Quick question, would standard reflectors and v flats to block light coming back work as well/better in terms of spread of light?

It would be nice to show what each of the lights for the model add, but I am sure you have that in hand for future stuff. I really liked it. Way better than a lot of stuff out there.

There are various ways of lighting the background, I tend to go for white reflective umbrellas for tutorial because they're cheap. Softboxes can also be used, so can the special background reflectors (very useful especially where space is limited but not as cheap). Standard reflectors work too, but the light from them isn't always very even.

Flats to block light and reduce/prevent wrap is a very good idea, I didn't do it in this video just to keep it simple.

Yes, there will be other videos from the shoot that day, and the lighting used will be shown in them.

And now we've finished the video on lighting for muscle definitions (as requested by #garry966). It's sort of the same thing as rimlighting, so it's in the same video

Great tutorial. shows how getting the lighting right can make such a difference to the final image.

Like this one very much. Thanks for taking the time and effort to produce this.

We've now put the one on feathering a softbox up. There are various ways of feathering light, and I've only covered one method because the principle is the same regardless of where the light is positioned.
And there's a lot more detail in the written tutorial here

And finally (from the shoot on this day) here's our introductory video on how to pose a model.
To be honest I struggled with this one, it isn't an easy subject to cover in a short video, so I've covered the subject in much more depth on our lighting blog.
Part 1 is now up, and deals only with static posing, part 2 to follow in about a week.

And finally, part 2 of our basic posing tutorial, this one is about photographing a model who is dancing on the spot, the most usual way of getting fashion/beauty/glamour shots. Complete with video.
