I know you get what you pay for so I am researching more budget studio lights.

I am doing photography for a hobby and doubt I'll spend the £££ on some of the big boys kit. Therefore I am looking for a couple of studio lights as I have a space I've been given permission to use for free. I want to get a large octa, 140-150cm so speedlights won't cut it. I was thinking of some 400W studio lights.

I have been looking at the Lencarta and Elemental Kit. Can any users of this kit give me some comments and critique of each, or advise any other brands that should be considered.

Cheers
Matt

I can't offer any advice about the gear, but will add that Garry Edwards does seem wonderfully helpful - I have just ordered some Lencarta lights after many months reading and researching and he has patiently answered so many questions and given lots of advice, so well worth talking to.
As a total beginner to lighting, he has helped me work out just what I need and don't need without pushing any brand, though he is honest about his links to Lencarta. A man worth listening to and trusting in my opinion.

Can you share some of his advices here? I'm interested in hearing on what he had advised on those lencarta lights.
I'll gladly advise you or anyone else - but to be useful, advice has to be specific to your own needs, amount of available space and budget - so please feel free to give me a ring during working hours and we'll go from there

As Garry says, it is best to ask him direct, but he needed to know what I wanted to be able to do, in what sort of space and how much I wanted to spend. In actual fact, I told him as much when I contacted him in order to give him something to work on. I am in a similar position to you - a hobbyist just starting out with lighting. He actually pointed me towards the Smartflash units though I have gone for the ElitePro's as for me, the variable modeling lights will help me learn. He also gave me help working out what the different triggers did and what modifiers might be best suited to me, and then how to make sure I got what I wanted at the best price. Couldn't ask for more !
Watch some of his videos to see how he works and how he is to speak to, then call him.

I opted for the Lencarta Smart Flash 200. It arrived today and bought yesterday so top marks and big:thumbs: for delivery.

My first impressions are that I am impressed :D. It's build quality for a piece of equipment is ok, but for the price of £107, it's a bargain IMHO. In comparison to the other heads I was looking at and considering, I defiantly made the right choice for me.

I tried out an Elemental 250W at the weekend at a mates and thought it was again so-so but as a comparative to the Lencarta, the Smart Flash is way better value for money. I am glad I opted for the Smart Flash.

I also shot with a Bowens Gemini 200W & 400W at the weekend and out of the 3 (Len, Ele, Bow), the Bowens stood our as the better build quality, and the light from it consistent and beautiful. It was my favourite of the 3 brands, but also the more expensive. If I was going to buy any more, it would be between the Smart Flash Kit and Bowens Kit, then it comes down to how much I was happy to pay at that time.
