Studio light broken?!

Hey guys, long time no see

I'm popping in as I'm hoping you more knowledgeable people maybe able to help


I have two 'Stable Imaging JY-180A' studio lights/flashes. Maybe had them for about 2 years?!

One seems to have given up on me. The 'constant' light never gets used, but when I flicked it on to test it starts smoking instantly...lol
And it no longer fires. I thought at first it was maybe the bulb....so I swapped the bulbs round with my other flash but still the same result. It doesn't even fire now with the test button. I still have one working one, but I need two!!

What could have gone wrong?

Have you checked if there is a fuse blown on the light?

If stable cant help you I would just buy a new head, a studio light is not the type of thing to try and repair

Smoke is never a good sign for anything electrical! I suspect it is probably not economic to repair but its worth talking to the manufacturer first. Heads come up in the classifieds all the time, that would be my call.

Hi Tracey - did the smoke come from the constant modelling light or from the flash bulb? These lights are temperamental in my experience. the modelling light on these get HOT! so smoke from there if used for any length of time is likely to be from burning dust. I can imagine that using the modelling light for more than ten seconds could melt the insides of the unit quickly - I know my brother melted a set of gels into the unit when using the modelling light for about a minute!
