Next week I'm shooting some pics of a friend who's an mma fighter. The shoot will be in mma gym and would like some tips on lighting. Do I use flash, what kind and in what way? Any advice is much appreciated.

Really depends what you want the images to look like.

Check the gym out for lighting, particularly window/natural light. But there is a good chance you will wind up wanting to use some flash, as gym's generally aren't the best lit places. It could be that you want dark and 'gritty' though, so may be better off with no/less lighting.

Try two lights behind the subjects at 45ish degrees to give them an edge and show their muscles and a fill from the front.
Yes, that's a good starting point. We generally use strip softboxes, complete with honeycombs, for the rim lighting, then whatever works as a more or less frontal light - often a beauty dish.

As it happens, The Photography Show (March 1-4) Will be hosting a lot of lighting demos and tutorials each day, with some of the best known names in the business, on a very large stage. I don't have details of most of them but we'll be photographing a team of kick dancers each day, using our SuperFast flash heads to freeze the action - should be interesting
