All,

I’m interested in seeing if there is much take up on an organised studio shoot in London. First time I’m organising something like this so I’m hoping it pans out and can become a regular get together.

I have sourced a couple of Studios in East London, I have Make Up artists willing to be involved on a TFP basis and both professional model / dancer and TFP models.
I was thinking of organising a 4 hour portrait / fashion session on a sat / sun morning dates to be confirmed. 1 Pro Model & 1 TFP Model. 1 MUA.
The studio has a ton of lighting gear, backgrounds, infinity curve etc.
The cost would be between £35 - £50 depending on numbers. Max of 5 togs. (me and 4 others)
This would include all lighting, models etc. Just turn up with your cameras, props and creativity.
No Nudity/Glamour. The most nudity we would have is Lingerie (not sure what that classifies as!!). (all to be agreed before the day of course!)
We would do 10 min rotations. Tea Coffe facilities available.Lunch not provided so you would need to bring your own.

Depending on numbers we could do a full day and split into a morning and afternoon sessions and get an additional Pro model.

This isn’t a profit making scheme for me, its simply a way of getting some great shots, hands on with lighting, working with a cool MUA and splitting the costs.

I would need people to pay me upfront via paypal. I appreciate that some may not be comfortable with this but if I book all this and no one turns up I would be seriously out of pocket. It’s taken quite an effort to source all this at an affordable price.

(BTW – For those that are interested, the Essex Project is gathering pace as well and I will be in touch soon with some further details)

So, if you think you would be interested, and crucially, willing to pay up front, reply to this thread. I will build up a list of people and email them at some point with dates etc. I’m also happy to meet people beforehand. I work in London and Live in essex. If you need some sort of comfort to be involved my ebay ID is Bluetinsel where you will see my feedback, I have traded with many people on here and am happy to invite you round for a cuppa!.

If there is enough interest I will then select some dates to see what fits for the majority, request payment, liaise with the models and studio and book it. If for some reason one of the links in the chain breaks down and we cant do it I will set up other dates or provide full refunds.

I can’t refund anything if you decide to drop out / no show. However, I am happy to do my best to help you find someone to take your place and if there are enough responses then we should be able to have a few back ups.

If there is enough interest and its pans out well I may set up a meet up group but initially I wanted to do this within this forum / community.

So, reply to the thread if you are interested and we can take it from there…….

Anyone? Thought someone may have been interested.

This may or may not be of help, but someone else tried something similar and came unstuck because the models failed to turn up...

My advice is to avoid TFP models like the plague, it's much better to pay established models who have good feedback, they will at least turn up.

And you really don't need a MUA for this type of shoot, apart from anything else the amount of time that good makeup takes will seriously get in the way of the shoot.

Yeah, Garry's right. TFP models shouldn't even be called models. Without exception they are all terrible.

This is a very sweeping statement to make.
So you have worked with every model in the country that works TF?
I have worked with two models that work only TF, both of them are very professional and very reliable. They are also very much in demand.

I agree, I wouldn't go anywhere near that far.

I don't generally use TFP models because I prefer to work with experienced models and I'm happy to pay for them, but I hear a lot of stories from other photographers who have been let down. It always happens the same way - the model is enthusiastic but then goes quiet, the photographer can't get answers to emails and the phone is switched off.

The nearest I came to a TFP model was about 3 years ago when I needed an artistic nude model for the Lencarta lighting workshops that I was planning. My 'usual' model wasn't available, a jobs post on a modelling website ended up with me booking Cassie, who is an excellent model in every way, and totally reliable - but I didn't know that at the time and was worried in case she let me down and 8 people travelled from all over for a day with no model - so I booked another model as well, as I wanted to play safe. I would rather pay twice than take the risk.

Anyway, a girl who was very local and who had answered my call got the job as reserve. She had never modelled nude and from her portfolio photos it was obvious that she had only done TFP with beginner photographers. I asked her how much she wanted, it wasn't enough and I told her that I would pay her double, which was still less than the going rate. As she was very local I got her to call into my studio, I had a chat with her, and to make sure that she could cope, I took a few nude test shots of her. So far so good.

She didn't turn up! Fortunately Cassie did, so it didn't matter. About a week later she phoned me, said that she had left her phone at her mum's and so didn't know the date - is it this Sunday?
No, it was last Sunday.
Oh, well, I can come along this Sunday.
No you can't.

guys, guys, appreciate the feedback and warnings. Not the first time i have heard of tfp models not turning up.

lets get back on track.

I have a pro model willing to work at a reasonable rate (she is pretty damn good too!), as well as a tfp model who is very beautiful but not experienced, so one of them will definitely be there lol!!!

The make up is an integral part of the shoot and i have spoken to the mua who can create the looks in an hour. Both a natural look and something a little more avant guard.

The studio has more lighting gear than you can shake a stick at.

So it was simply a post to see if anyone would want to participate and share costs. I have budgeted about 40 quid or so for 4-5 togs for a 4 hour shoot.

I didnt think that would be too bad for a pro model, tfp model and an MUA who has worked in some big tv productions and is simply looking to get some additional creative shots for her portfolio.

I have a couple of TPers interested via pm, but the take up has been a bit slow, which i am suprised at as all they need to do is pay and arrive....

So, if anyone is interested and wants more details i am happy to provide them.

I guess what may put some off is payment up front. Not sure how to combat that really. I can provide some references from some of the others i have worked with i suppose....

Come on tpers, this could be good fun and a great experience

Tell me to mind my own business, but I think that what's lacking here is instruction. In my experience, that's what people need and are prepared to pay for. The ones I run are usually over-subscribed, they cost a lot more than yours and some people travel hundreds of miles to attend.

Also, have you thought about putting this post in 'Meeting Place'?

wouldnt tell you that at all garry. All advice is greatly accepted and this s a great forum with great people willing to help so many thanks.

I agree. I need to firm up the plans and post the detail.

Also....meeting place would be a good start as well.....watch this space lol

Im not instructing / teaching anything. Just getting a few likeminded people in a studio.

Hopefully it will come off...

Thanks again

Wow, you've worked with two models that only shoot TF, and both of them are very professional and reliable.

That doesn't make them good models. That makes them professional and reliable.

The thing that struck me about this is, if they are so much in demand, why are they not working for pay ?

As maybe they do it as a hobby, fun, and just enjoy it, much in the same way we enjoy pointing a camera at someone there are people out there who just love getting in front of it and going home with some nice pics.

fun, hobby, building a portfolio, who knows.

Hi Greg,
I have arranged many studio shoots for the last two years and always used TFP or TFCD models, all of which have been excellent. For some, it is their first shoot and others have worked professionally, but have been happy to model at these shoots. I believe that an important factor in getting models to turn up is to show them that they will get good results if they work with you.

Do you have a printed portfolio to show them, or a portfolio on facebook or elsewhere that they could see? If either, then arrange to meet with them for a coffee and a chat before booking them. In this way you 'break the ice' and can soon assess if they are genuine and would be pleased to work with you.

If you can afford it with group contributions, say you will pay £10 towards expenses after the shoot. Make sure they can get to the shoot by checking if they have own transport or rely on public transport. Make sure that they check on public transport if the shoot is on a Sunday ....... the day I always arrange my shoots.

Make sure that the Togs taking part can actually use a camera and will not fumble about on the day and possibly not produce results that will satisfy.

Take control of the end results. By that I mean that YOU receive all prints or images on CD to send to the models. In this way you can chase up the Togs that are slow and the models can rely on you and not have to chase individuals. Give the models a time by which they will receive their images.

Sometimes it may go wrong for various reasons, it almost did yesterday when one of the models had not checked and the train would make her late. I collected her so we were all on time. The shoot yesterday was with 4 new models, two male and two female, all with a some experience and with a specific Theme........ Valentines. It went very well and you could do the same thing with a little planning. Good luck and message me if you feel I may be able to help.

Thanks fopr the reply and offer of help. Its good to know that i have pretty much done everything you have recommended so hopefully it will be fine.

Its no small task organising these. I have a good tog willing to participate, the girls have confirmed, the studio has confirmed availability so its all looking good at the moment for one of the shoots based near me.

The one in london has had a couple of togs interested and a pro model interested at the right price. Just need a few more to keep the costs suitably low.

Will let you know how it goes.

Thansk again for the offer of advice and will give you a shout if need be

Rgds
