Some changes to access on accessing this journal (and its society) have occurred since I last mentioned this under the label of The Scottish Society of the History of Photography (SSHoP).

In spite of the Society's name, the journal content extended far wider than just Scotland. And, they seem to have just rebranded themselves as "Studies in Photography"

"Studies in Photography is dedicated to the research and promotion of photography within historic and contemporary contexts.
It does this through its flagship journal along with special edition prints, books, lectures and exhibitions."

Part of this rebranding (and new website) is that members/subscribers can now read all the previous copies of Studies in Photography (from 1996 to present) online.

I'm not aware of any magazine/journal comparable to this one, so if photography within a social/cultural/historical setting is of interest, the availability of the back copies makes the membership much more attractive than it was a few months ago. The journal has a slightly academic feel, but is still very readable, and for me at least, always very interesting. It has had a bit of a Scottish bias (the lectures and exhibitions are all in Scotland, I think), but I assume that part of the rebranding will mean even more UK and international journal content than they have had before.

The digital membership is £25 pa and full membership is £40 pa (plus postage for the journal). You need a digital or full membership to access the archived copies of the journal.

You can preview the journal contents on the web site

Apart from being a member I have no other association with the Society.
