Okay, I'm trying to expand my nighttime photography, and yet any shot has a horrible red cast to it. Bloomin sodium vapour streetlights....

So what can I do about it? Is it some I can reduce in post production, or is there a trick I'm missing in the actual photographing stage?

Note: I don't have photoshop. I use GIMP for editing images, just in case you suggest using such-and-such tool in Photochop. :|

You should be able to correct the white balance in GIMP I think. Failing that, if you are shooting in RAW you must be able to correct it in your conversion program (sorry I use Cannon and I dont know what the Nikon software is)

Have you tried altering white balance tungsten

Thanks!

I'll look into the whole white balance thing and get back to you if there's no luck... Nikon's Software doesn't really have much in the way of advanced features, hence using GIMP. I just use Nikon's Picture Project to manage the photo's.

Gah! GIMP doesn't open my NEF files. Back to the forums to find the answer to this one... :(

Solved - Installed UFRaw, which does an excellent job of processing RAW images, so I'll be using that a bit. Used it quite a lot on Linux, and glad it's available of Windows too...

Thanks guys!

Glad you got it sorted
