Hi all,

looking for some advice please - I've seen a lot of street portraiture photos that use a technique where the outer ring of the portrait is dark, to the extent that its as if the person is sticking their face out of a dark room.

Can someone explain how this is technically done? Is this a post processing technique or is it something that can be replicated on-camera? As an example, I found the below image on Google - credit to Robert Mackay.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Careful lighting, careful processing. Certainly not a look I'd think of as 'street photography'.

It's a heavy but selective vignette technic which I use to some extent in most of my images.......

The image you've posted is a result of post processing, yes. The background was clearly dark to begin with though.. you can't get away wit this if you shoot against a white wall for example.

Radial Filter in Lightroom would be a good tool to use.
