Off to SUA in a month or so's time. Can anyone in that neck of the woods recommend any 'must see' places with the camera?

I'll be there for a week, so plenty of time to explore.

TIA.

Tis good down by the river, very pretty. But then you probably knew that.

I've been following this thread with great interest, as I plan to spend a night there.

Any recommendations for a really nice hotel would be appreciated.

TIA

There is (or used to be) a butterfly farm just on the south end of the main river bridge. It's quite humid inside so get the gear warm first to avoid too much condensation.

Billesley Manor (SP?)
Out of town, but lovely.
I can reccomend a good taxi firm down that way as well if you need one....

The RSC, and the gardens next door, are all undergoing renovation right now...
The canal basin is pretty much inaccessible. ~In fact I think they have the lock gates off for a rebuild too!

If you have transport, then there is LOADS of stuff within 30 minutes drive.

What sort of things are you into/looking for?

We have country houses, motor museums, windmills, rivers, hills, water mills, Warwick Castle. Straight off the top of my head in 10 seconds flat?

I'm about 10 miles away, and pass a working Vulcan aircraft to get to Stratford.

SUA isn't the most photogenic place at the best of times - the parish church and the river are the most interesting bits. Most of the town centre is geared towards day-trippers - souvenir shops, pizza outlets and so on or is otherwise packed with standard highstreet chain stores. And the parking is bloody extortionate during the day.

Street map here: http://www.stratford-upon-avon.co.uk/soamapl.htm

What is probably the best tea room in the town is on the first floor above one of the grockle shops. I think it's on the corner of High Street and Bridge Street, but anyway it's the corner just to the south of the wide street with the likes of M&S on.

The most interesting shop in town is Paxton & Whitfield, the specialist cheese place, on Wood Street. http://www.paxtonandwhitfield.co.uk/

There is a butterfly farm, but when I went (some years ago now) most of the butterflies were very raggy looking. You could use a tripod though.

Other than that, and going to the theatre, you're best going out of town if you have transport. Warwick has been mentioned. There's also Ely and Pershore and down towards the Cotswolds, eg Stow on the Wold, Broadway (though that's rather touristy as well), Moreton in the Marsh and Chipping Campden.

If you're into art, there's the private art gallery and museum at Compton Verney (excellent restaurant and tea room as well). http://www.comptonverney.org.uk

Batsford Arboretum at Moreton in the Marsh. http://www.batsarb.co.uk/

also there are street performers which are good to photograph

Thanks all for the pointers, looks like we'll spread the footprint of the break a little wider than originally planned (although a day in Warwick was always on the cards).

Thank you for the head's-up on this.

I just came back from SUA today, spent the last couple of days over there on my way back from a small & quick tour around parts of Wales and England.

Stayed at the Alveston Manor, a lovely place to stay and within walking distance from all the attractions and city centre.

My original plan was to spend just the one day there, but I ended up extended my stay to 2 days. Loved it.

Today, went to the butterfly house, was nice, but is really really hot in there. If anyone's going there make sure not to take any jacket in there, and dress lightly.

On the way back to South Wales, drove past Bourton-on-the-water, and had a light meal there. It's about 40 minutes drive, South, from SUA and well worth the stop-over.
