I have been playing around on Google Earth and have found two strange things, can any of you out there shed any light on these two things.

Place.jpg

This place is just a little north of Anchorage Aaska if you look it's got a big fence around it and a car in the centre fence.

Here is a close up

And then this in Greenland under the ice sheet it must be miles big.

The first looks military and the second I'd say an oil tanker. But from the sheer size of it, It seems more than that o.o

There's actually sites dedicated to this kind of thing. It's really quite interesting to see what people find! Did you see the one with the camels in Egypt I think it was. You can zoom in so close that you can see them and their owners. Fantastic!

The first looks like a VOR Point that is used for Navigation of aircraft in the air.

Chris

The second one I just looked at on GE and its so big, if you zoom in, I think it might be an area that was photographed with less snow cover.... Greenland does lose some of its snow doesnt it?  Geography isnt my strong point

have you ever looked at Area 51 on goole earth?
there's a few weird things on there

yup
1st certainly looks like a VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Radio)
it's a radio beacon that planes use for navigation
works a bit like a lighthouse
sends out a blip, then a circular sweep
the electronics in the plane uses that to work out which direction the VOR lies, and what bearing you are to/from it
makes for very accurate navigation
looks like it has a DME attached - many do (Distance Measuring Equipment)
between the two you can work out which direction you are and how far away from, the beacon - which gives you an exact point in space (can't get altitude tho, but there are other ways of doing that)
hth

the second may be just a scan by the satellites at a different resolution/date/season
there may have been something there they wanted to look at
if it's taken in a different season you'll get different colours

and just south of it is a black strip
something they don't want you to see going on there!!!

just noticed
#1 is right next to the airport!!!!!!!

PapaLazarou, Post the pictures of Area 51 when you find them. I'm in suspense now

Some mad stuff on Google earth I could spend all day flying around the world, I feel like superman.

Not much to see at Area 51
Type in Google's search bar Google earth UFO and check it out.

No. 1 looks like the hatch of a Delta IV rocket launching silo to me. The biggest of the ICBMs, delivering 12, or so, independently re-entering H-bomb tipped warheads.

If not that, then it must be a Guantanamo for Mongolians. With one of them big Yurds (Mongolian tents) in the middle.

Or it could be a circus hide-away, where – in great secrecy – they develop new acts to wow the US public.

I am going to have a look now
Bob

It is not VOR or VOR/DME and definately not TACAN.

Its an FLR-9. Also known as an Elephant Cage.

There used to be 6 to 8 of them around the world including one in the UK. Only two are now operational.

do tell what's an FLR-9 do?

do tell what's an FLR-9 do?
from wikipedia:
"The AN/FLR-9 is a type of very large circular "Wullenweber" antenna array, built at many locations during the cold war for HF direction finding of high priority targets. The world-wide network, known collectively as "Iron Horse", could locate on HF communications from almost anywhere on the planet."

found this as well

crikey we live and learn

it's the vehicle test ground at Millbrook
cars go very fast roundy roundy

Thanks. Looks a bit wierd tho dunnit

I think that's Brooklands. Now an industrial park :(

Any clues as to where it is?

Looks like an airfiled come light industrial estate.

Yep. I love how you can see virtually all the track, apart from the bit they built a bloody housing estate on :bonk:

This is not a recent shot as the bulk of the 'infield' is now 'Mercedes World' - but if you like motor racing and haven't been to Brooklands in Surrey, do make the effort. The museum is quite big with a range of iconic machinery and the old boys that run the place on a volunteer basis are happy to spend hours chatting about what is there

Edit: 2blue got it btw ;)

Remember to turn on the "Community Layer" (it has different names in different versions, but look in the layers section for something about communuty) inside Google Earth :) it points to places people have already spotted and posted on http://bbs.keyhole.com/entrance.php?Cat=0 it is hard to find something odd that hasnt been spotted and posted about before :)

Stop it all of you immediately - I am supposed to be working....!!!!

This is one of my fave places on Google Earth.

Oh, and Hi Phil !!

I've driven around there and its a crazy place. A lot of the planes are 'mothballed' and can be made fit to fly in no time. They have more servicable F16's in there, than our force has aircraft!

I did a search on my address and zooming in I could see that the car needs a wash and our laundry on the line has been immortalised unwittingly by google earth. How bizarre is that, I wanted to nose in the neighbours gardens but was met with my own y-fronts swinging in the wind! Not good.
