I see the second named storm,Bert, is about to do its worst over the weekend. Judging by reports I've seen on TV, the brunt of it will hit from Stoke-on-Trent north and ,as ever, Scotland being battered. Very high winds and even higher gusts.. 50/60 mph with some forecasts at 60-70mph accompanied by heavy rain,snow and goodness knows what else. I think ice was mentioned.

I have a personal interest in this as we are flying back to the UK on Sunday. Boeing 737-800. Whilst the brunt of it may well have past the strong winds,especially on the south side of it will cause problems for transport, especially flights.

Possible flight disruption..I'd say..certain flight disruption.

I was speaking to a lady at breakfast this morning as we waited to get our brekky and she asked when we were flying home..Sunday. She'll also be on the flight ..into Birmingham and when I told her about the storm and how it will affect turbulence she said she'd ..quote.."drink alcohol" .I advised her it wasn't the best thing to do.

haha yeah one thing i have never done alcahol before and during flying
i always find it odd folk frontloading with stella at manch airport
 
Now, I read that the forecast here for Sunday is heavy rain and thunderstorms. Should be a lively flight from start to finish.

Considering some, who have lived here for 30 years, and have never seen a TS then two within days..this second one is coming from Madeira.,250 miles north, I wonder if climate change is playing a part.
 
Been to Madeira twice this year and this the first year in many that we’ve had some wet/windy weather, locals tell us the weather is changing with cooler/wetter weather getting to lower regions of the island than before more often.

Ah..yes. I recall you mentioning your visits to Madeira when someone brought it up. We loved that holiday. Climatologists say that southern Europe will become too hot for northern country holiday-makers and northern Europe,as it warms, will replace it ,

A very stormy night here on the east coast of Northern Ireland. It's still blowing hard and raining but seems to have eased a bit
 
It may well be an interesting weekend if like me you use flightrader.
 
gets the wind up though and the renewables love it.

Our flight will be passing over the south coast about 1730 tomorrow and I've been told the storm will be well gone by then and is just affecting Nottingham north anyway. Might still be a bit windy,though.

Washing Machine set to come on and if I get up early enough in the tumble dryer and done before 9AM
 
There is quite a lot of stacking at Heathrow, but no "go arounds" that I can see, so the landings ATM seem straightforward.
 
It's a crazy 16 or 17 degrees here, and VERY windy. I have a gig to play this morning in a village, and I'm wondering if it will be safe to drive .

nope thats made up , modern wind turbines can work at over 100mph
 
Very interesting weather over the weekend.
I had to go to the farm unexpectedly on Friday night - family illness - and didn't even know whether my car would get there, following snow on Tuesday and Wednesday, but it did, thanks to the local farmers who had repeatedly cleared the local roads.

Saturday morning at 0700, -4c, thick new snow and very strong winds. A nightmare just getting around the animals with food, breaking the ice in the various water troughs and a complete and continuous cycle, finish one round and then immediately start again. And then, very suddenly, the temperature soared, the snow turned to torrential rain and everything turned from white to green in just a few very wet and uncomfortable hours.

Now just got back home, back to my life of relative luxury. Very lucky that the temperature rose as it did, otherwise I might have been stuck for weeks - when the snow is bad there, it's a simple choice of quad bike or 4WD tractor, nothing else can move:(

On last nights 10pm news bulletin they showed severe flooding in Tetbury and I think places in Wales including IIRC Pontypridd, all due to the storm.

I can only surmise the ground was so waterlogged that it took a few hours to drain into the water courses & rivers....hence why it seemed a little later than the worst of the storm passing ???
 
Someone has managed to get their car stuck in the floods at the bottom of our village, and I suspect finding another route will be interesting.

A local farmer went out last night in what I assume was a 4WD truck with snorkel, and found floods level with the top of his bonnet on another local road.

That storm was far worse than I realised..being in Tenerife and missing news bulletins. The regional news down here, Points West, showed very serious flooding, we even had snow !! The wheelie bin in our side passage was blown over and the recycle box was half-way down the garden. A neighbour's fence panel was destroyed.

The flight we took home, yesterday, to Birmingham was 45 minutes late arriving at Tenerife South due to the strong head winds from the "tail end" of Bert which was then moving out over the North Sea. The flight to Bristol,however was delayed by two hours but I don't know why that was. Ours was initially delayed by 30 minutes but left on time so I think the Bristol flight was delayed because of the weather and in fact, it was probably very late arriving at Tenerife South,too. Because we had that tail wind the flight time was 3hrs 45 instead of 4hrs. 30. It was noticeable,too. Unfortunately, as we got off the plane..many in shorts and short-sleeved shirts..one lass in a bikini top and shorts..Lol..it was pouring down but not that cold.

Btw. I can use this opportunity (rather than a new post,)to tell you, as you follow these things, that I looked at Planefinder at 8.15am this morning because I heard what I knew was a B-52 fly over our house relatively low. It was at 11,000 ft 430kts. It had just taken off from RAF Fairford 15 miles away, east but like a tanker at sea, it took an arc path flying west to Gloucester and then turning north over our house and then headed east. I was able to follow it out over the North Sea until it got past North Germany (far north,near Denmark) and the transponder was switched off. I just wondered where it was heading on that trajectory, certainly not the USAF/NATO base at Ramstein..SW Germany.

These are two photos I took from the flight home on Sunday afternoon and we were about 1800 miles from storm "Bert" and this is part of the "tail" of it. We were at 33,000 ft and, I think, near Madeira.
