You want to sow them now they need a cold period I think it's called vernalisation.
If you have a plot and a garden hoe out a line and sow a row like broad beans.
3-4" deep should make them hard for birds or rats etc to dig up but if you have mesh or something covering them is a good plan as it's easy to overlook when you won't see anything until May.
Otherwise set them in deep trays or pots outside. They don't mind being separated later in fact breaking the roots a bit (in winter) helps them produce more fibrous root better for transplanting.
That is the idea, last winter had Jays in the wood and only had monkey nuts, yes they showed some interest but sure will be better with acorns but worried about them going off before winter arrives. Thanks, Russ.
