Is there a way I can find out if a product I am interested In buying is stolen? After all the riots i really don't want to buy a stolen body when the time comes to upgrade.

Common sense is the easiest way to find out if it's nicked. Ask questions, if you get the "I got given two £1000 cameras for my birthday" story or the seller doesn't appear to know anything about either the product or photography in general, or has (like the guy with the iphones) 40 of them, that should be a give away......

Buy from a reputably source. Remember if it's too good to be true then it probably is

So I'm guessing there is no site where I can put serial numbers in and see?

Not that I know of? But as said, I think the obvious giveaway is the cheap prices and equally 'cheap' stories that follow.

But off places like eBay you can't really tell who you are buying off, yes there is the feedback score but what is to say that is a source to trust?

The feedback shows that they've been a reputable seller... Or am I missing something?

The simple answer is, don't buy from "places like Ebay" if you're not 100% sure about the seller...

I like to always make a point of mailing a seller before anything, just to get a response as reassurance about something normally related, such as reason for sale for larger items.

Buy from a proper shop with a reasonable reputation then you will be ok. Don't touch ebay with a 20 foot pole unless person can show a receipt for that particular camera and has a reasonable reason for selling it.

Short answer is no there isn't. That's why everyone is suggesting alternatives :)

Distributors and shops have the serial numbers of the stock their. If so, it should not be too difficult to make a list of stolen goods.

It would not work for everything, but should for cameras, PCs, TVs, etc.

used check mend once to find out why a friends ebay mobile phone purchase didnt work results came back as blocked imei in the uk so it does work for £1 odd shell out, my mate still lost the case though on ebay even with evidence.

Ask for serials before you buy for this reason, bit like an hpi check on a car

If you have evidence of eBay knowingly supporting the sale of stolen goods you should report the matter to Trading Standards and the Police!

If you are that concerned Anthony about it being stolen in the riots ask for proof of purchase. Most people would be able to put their hands on one in the first 6 months after buying something of value.

if you buy from a reputable dealer then I can't really see any problem. If in any doubt then steer well clear.
