Hi
We've just had some lovely chaps from the Police come to our canteen. Most of it was the usual stuff on locking doors and marking valuables with UV pens!
Although I did mention that I don't like the UV pen thing because I like to sell things on and this devalues them hugely!

They support an online register where you can keep a record of your valuables with your serial numbers. If these were ever stolen - you mark them as such and this links automatically to their databases. So if they turn up - maybe with a different police force there may be a chance they get returned.
Just checked the site out www.immobilise.com and it seems straightforward. The police did say its free to register products and their serial numbers, although the company does generate revenue by adding onto the basic service - so you can upload photos/till receipts etc or search if something you're buying is stolen, but those are chargeable.

I'll take a proper look when I get home tonight - but thought some folks on here might be interested in it - as there are often threads on stolen goods.
If anything its probably a useful exercise for me to go through and log my valuables!!!!

Seems like a good idea!

Was discussing with a mate why there wasn't something like this already.
They need to get the insurance companies involved as well and start getting them adding all the articles claimed for to it.
I do wonder though, how many people actually make a not of the serial no of the products they buy?

I certainly don't but I'd never thought to. You've now inspired me to take note of serial numbers on my possesions and store it somewhere safe. Excellent thread, and yes it does make you wonder why the insurance companies don't join with the police to create an online database of stolen goods.

On a similar tip, my freind got her stolen wallet & iPod back through Gumtree! Someone had chased the thieves down and got the items back but couldn't get in contact with her, so put an advert up on gumtree and thankfully she found out about it.

I'd just be worried about the insurance companies refusing to pay out unless your kit is all registered?

In this instance ,you upload the serials after it's been stolen, to alert others about buying it so it's not really an issue here.

However, I can see your point. But surely if an insurer specifies that you must register all serial numbers with them in order for the item to be covered, then you're free to go find an insurer without those terms? It's not something they could introduce midway through the life of a policy.

I register all my Nikon kit on their site even if it is 2nd hand so I have a record of all the serial numbers etc.

Apple keep a record of all my computers.

It is mainly the small items where this is of most benefit.
