Just seen the following posted on facebook by blackpool police, thought id post it on here incase anyone is offered any equipment, i know i certainly wouldnt want my equipment to be stolen, and this is only round the corner from my house so i'd rather the dirty theif was caught

Police are appealing for information after over £3,000 of camera equipment was stolen from a terraced house in Staining back in July. The burglary took place during the morning of Wednesday 24th July when someone has broken the lock on the victim’s rear patio doors and stolen three items from the kitchen worktop.

The items stolen are high value camera equipment and police believe the items may have been sold locally and therefore are appealing to anybody who has recently bought or been offered the items for sale.

The items stolen are:-
Canon EOS-1d mark 2 digital camera , Body number: 9313a003 aa
Canon EF 70-200 mm f/2.8l is usm lens, Lens number: 7042a003 aa

JVC HD Everio camcorder, g2-e207 ber

Anyone with any information about the possible whereabouts of these items is urged to call PC 682 James Winfield on 101.

Someone's been telling porkies if they think that that kit is worth £3k+!!

And 7042a003aa certainly isn't the serial number of any Canon lens.... Perhaps I shouldn't, but I can't help wondering how legitimate this 'theft report' is....

If it was stolen back in July it's probably long since been fenced. For social media to be effective for this sort of thing it needs to be out there straight away.

true, but with the serial number somebody may have bought it and realize that it's stolen.

New-for-old insurance policy. When you can't buy the item new any longer, it'll be replaced with the closest available alternative, hence the value of the kit appears inflated.

When I was burgled about 20 years ago, they took my second-hand FG and a couple of lenses; the insurance company paid out for a replacement FM2 as it was the only manual Nikon camera available new at the time, despite my giving them the receipts and explaining that I'd bought it all second-hand.

If it was new for old, the valuation would be in the region of £7500. :)

Yes, if the announcement had included the serial numbers. But 9313a003aa and 7042a003aa aren't serial numbers, so there's not really much point...

For an 8MP 1.3x crop camera with a max ISO of 3200 and a vertical grip? Even insurance companies aren't that daft.

I know what you mean; maybe it was the value declared when purchased and what the chap had receipts for.

Look, you can't have it both ways.

Either the kit is valued at like for like, which is sub £2000, or it's valued at new for old - the only comparables for which are a 1Dx, a 70-200 MkII and the equiv video cam.

It's a fairly simple calculation.
