What are the best sites for stock photography have been looking to start to sell some of my photos but so many sites to choice from. Any advise on sites people are using would be great. Thanks Daren

iStock is a good one to start with, as is Alamy. You need to shoot a great deal to earn anything from stock beyond a few quid here and there. It's something you build over time. The stock market is in a bit of a decline at the moment though... too much royalty free stuff and too many people doing their own in house stuff because they think it's easy.

Treat stock as a side-line or even a hobby as you build up a folio of stuff. Just read the small print carefully.. some ask for exclusivity with leaves you little option professionally elsewhere if all your work is tied up legally.

Decent resource here.

Adding to what Pookyhead said, these days stock is unlikely to pay for your helicopter, But, the acceptance standards are technically demanding, so you will probably become a better photographer as you will have to shoot to a professional standard. You will also need to find original subjects that are attractive to clients - so again, shooting stock will probable improve your work.

Watch out for scammers. All stock sites, without exception, are free to submit to. Any site trying to charge you is a con. The real sites make their money by selling the images and passing some of the dosh onto you. But today the fee per image tends to be a few cents and you probably won't be able to cash in until you have, commonly, $100 dollars worth of sales. This can take years. (Been a while since I bothered with stock, so anyone more up to date - please put me right on this!)

Alamy pay out on slightly less than $100 I think, Getty certainly do, as I had a payment from them last week for about £38.
