I was wondering what peoples opinions on Stock Photography were....

Can anyone give me any advise on how to start up? Pros/cons... whether its worth the cost? What sort of return you get/If at all? Is it best to stick with Getty or do people have other image libraries they photograph for? I heard for getty you pay to submit your images is this the same for all libraries?

I take it my little Nikon D80 would not produce large enough images??????

If anyone could enlighten me with their thoughts/ideas/knowledge that would be great!!!!!!!

Cheers :)

i was going to do stock but found out you end up with about 10% profit i was going to do istock but the price was $1 in which you only get 30% = 30 cents and currency change = 15p. as for your camera it will be perfect for stock most stock agencies recommend 10mp camera's.

It's hard work and soulless. You need a big portfolio. A good stock image is not necessarily a good photograph. Plus you need a fairly robust ego. The Images need to be technically perfect but they will not tell you what is wrong with them.

Having said all that it can be quite fun and you can make good money if you manage it well.

Yes... I guess if you are only getting pence per image (if sold) then you will need a big portfolio.... Cheers for advise guys!

Forget the microstock sites where you get pennies and submit your pictures to Alamy - where you can get a decent return!

The agency I'm with does pay a higher rate of commission and have just put the commission up again.

The stock world is continually changing. This year Alamy reduced its commission to submitters and now the microstock site, Fotolia has just announced a similar reduction although it also includes a price increase!!

More sites are now looking for you to submit your images exclusively to them and gradually changing their commission structures to almost force this.

There was a thread in the business section about Alamy recently that included other sites which you might find useful
