Intro

It seems I'm joining this a little late! It's going to be a 45 Week Challenge for me! :D I recently got a new lens - 35mm f/1.8, so I want to make the most of it by shooting at least once every week. I really enjoy improving my skills and techniques and hopefully this will encourage me to do so.

About Me

I've had my camera for 3 years now, and to be honest I haven't gained the skill I think I should've in that time period. That's probably due to the fact I have on and off periods with regards to photography, but hopefully I'll stick at it time!

Week 7 - Delicate

Well my first image in at week 7. It took me a while to think of some decent ideas for this. I had a couple but after seeing my girlfriend last night a new idea popped into my head.

Looking forward to next week! :)

Hi Steven,

Will be interested to see your photo's taken with this lens as I'm considering buying it soon. I also joined late (Week 4ish) as I didn't have my camera until then but I'm slowly catching up!

Look forward to seeing you photos,

Regards,
Will.

Like the 'delicate' photo - amazing sharpness and good DoF. I also like how the closer part of the necklace is really sharp and in focus :D

Good start! :D

Will.

Thanks Will. It's a great lens, incredibly sharp compared to the kit lens. This weeks picture was taken with the lens

Appreciated, thanks :)

Hi, Steve, yip that's delicate...

I would agree that it's a bit overexposed, at least it looks over on my laptop.

Interesting choice to place the pendant central and convert it to b&w.

Look forward to you catching up with 1 through 6....;)

Cheers.

Hi mate... Great start to your 45!

I think if i'm being over critical i'd have had a wider DOF and had everything in front of the necklace in focus but let the back be out of focus as is... may have meant a bit of hyperfocal focusing but still like I said ... maybe im being over critical... It's better than my delicate effort!

Good luck with your 44 still to come!

Hi Steven

thats a great shot to start your 52/45  Certainley looks a delicate piece & captured well .Possible just a tad less light would have bought it out even more ?

Lokk forward to seeing your next shot

Thanks Blondie - It looks ok on my laptop, maybe my screen is a little out

Thanks, I'm taking that was a joke?

I'm trying to decide if I should try and catch up 1-6 or just continue from here ;)

I see where your coming from. With the light that was available I struggled to get a decent shot even at f/1.8! I do quite like the way it has isolated the necklace though.

Appreciate the comments guys

Week 1 - Accommodation

Added a version without the selective colouring:

I really wanted to take a picture of something tonight, so I thought I would try and take a picture of my sister. It's not exactly accommodation, but the photo was taken inside a house .

Quite happy with this one!

Hiya Steven,

First of all welcome to the Photo52. Glad you have made a start and it will be interesting to see if you manage to do some of the past week themes (look forward to seeing the photos if you do).

Week 7: A lovely take on the theme and a goregous piece of jewellery too. I prefer your edited verstion, although for me, I think it may be better if you can clone the shadow around the neckline of the top (which is a bit distracting). But otherwise a lovely image in b&w.

Week 1: Your sister is very beautiful, and such a natural pose, I really like this. Also like your choice of selective colouring, even though it is not something I am aufe with so can't comment too much from a technical aspect. However, I love the big window in the background and the DOF including the house beyond. So in two aspects this does fit with accommodation, i.e., your sister being accommodating to pose for the photo and the setting.

Well done and I look forward to watching the progress of your project.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Steve,

Love your accomodation photo - gorgeous pose, clarity, DoF and lighting - what lighting did you use?

Good job!

I knew it was only a matter of time before you stumbled across my thread - you've seen everyone else's

#1 - I never really noticed the shadow and don't see it as distracting myself, but I can see where you are coming from. I like to try and get it right in the camera first, and these are the sort of small details that I always seem to miss unfortunately.

#2 - Thank you very much, and I never though about it that way

The lighting was really complicated to be honest. I went in the room, and switched the light on  I intentionally put her beside the window to try and get some natural light to fall onto her face, maybe just a bit of luck to be honest.

Looking at it, it could maybe do with a slight bit of fill-flash, but like I said, I never seem to notice things like this when taking the actual image. Perhaps I need to spend more time thinking about the image before snapping away

 Steven I am still trying to get round to everyone's threads, and hopefully one day I will. Yours just caught my eye tonight and I am glad I 'stumbled' upon it.... I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Cheers

Hi mate

Really liking your 52 so far. Your accomodation shot is a great picture... I think however it may have been improved by your sister maybe hving a towel round her rather than a dress or a dressing gown etc with a towel in her hair... maybe hugging a cup of coffee... would just be more homely!

But I really get where you are coming from and I guess your sister may not have appreciated having to dress up for the shot!

Your use of selective colour in this shot I dont know if it adds to the shot or not! Im not even sure whether id go for full colour or B and W... and maybe the selective colour does work! Im just not sure!

Hi, there, I know very little about lighting but you did really well with this one, plenty of detail in her face and the background.

I can't decide whether she's happy to be photographed or not...

I guess your explanation of accommodation fits (just about;))

Cheers.

Hi Mark, thanks for stopping by!

Hmm... The idea of the towel does seem like it would fit, but I have to say, it's not something I thought of ;) It probably would have fit the subject better and conveyed a better image of "accommodation".

I've removed the selective colouring, let me know what you think!

I know what you mean. I took two pictures, one she is really smiley, but I quite liked the expression in this image.

I love the pose on this shot. I'm not sure the selective colouring works, although it's done well. I think it's more to do with the background and area it's been taken. The shadow on the neck is slightly off putting, but it's really sharp and good otherwise.

One thing that springs to mind is maybe a crop from the middle to remove the lower part. That gives it a more homely feel (and there's a house in the background outside!).

Does your sister now realise that she's now going to have a career change and become your model/photography assistant? :D My sister always hides if I try to convince her to do anything for a photograph!

A never actually noticed the shadow before, it is quite hash, isn't it!

Haha I she doesn't know yet, but it won't be long until she realises

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!

My mind is completely blank for ideas for Chaos. I had one idea but I'm tripodless at the moment! Need to start thinking

Week 3 - Style

Ok... so I've got some catching up to do and a little out of ideas. I have two pictures to post up, one week 3 and one week 5. These are pictures that have all been taking this year, therefore within the "52 week" period, in fact they were only taken last week, so I think it still counts :suspect:

The London Eye, a very stylish structure indeed

Thank you MD! I love London, and it's lovely at night. I managed to get a couple of night, but unfortunately didn't have a tripod with me :(

This is not part of my 52

Hi Steve,

Really like the London Eye shot - it's so sharp! Great angle too.

Also like the Hard photo, but only thing I'd say is you could crop from the right a little bit to put the bloke a bit more off-centre? THat's just my opinion though and it's still a great shot.

Will :D

Hi Will,

Thanks mate

I did try a crop like that but I prefer the original (I think it makes him look more isolated)

I'll take a look at your 52 shortly!

Hiya Steven,

You are doing a great job at catching up

Week 3: Now that is a smart photo and great composition. My only tiny nitpick would be the cloud in the top right corner ..... if there were more cloud in the image I'd say fine, but because there isn't it does draw my eye so may be better cloned out (although i can probably see why you left it in to give the impression of the scale of the London Eye) Hopefully one day I will one day get to go on the London Eye .... something to add to my list of things to do. BTW also love your other photo that you posted of the night scenece.

Week 5: I love this image, so simple yet speaks the message you were trying to convey. At first I wasn't sure about the horizontals, but the more I look at it (especially the larger image) I realise that it works here .... almost like a downhill slope, i.e., the hard life .... so well done.

I am really enjoying following your project and look forward to keeping track of your progress.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Hi, Dave, another 2 great takes.

The detail in the London Eye is great and you've come away with an unusual composition.

Hard, now that's one of the best in this theme...the look on the guy's face says it all. I really like the composition and the space you've around him accentuates his isolation as does the b&w conversion.

Cheers.

Thanks for your kind comments :)

Hi, Steve, I like your take on #2, nice and simple. Sharp and good dof.

Only thing I'm not keen on is the unpainted section on the right running from top to bottom.

Cheers.

I love the idea ... and a great photo too!

Hi again Steve :D

Like your 'New' photo - nice and sharp and I really like the detail. WHat did it look like in colour? Would be interesting to see if it conveyed the 'New' theme even more by seeing the transition from the old colour to new.

Will :).

Hi Will,

Thanks again mate. Erm... I'll dig out the colour version and see what's it's like. I like your idea though of actually seeing the change in colour. I'm off to work now but I'll check it out later.

In the mean time...chaos..:bonk:
