Can I replace the element?

…. or have I got to buy a new one?

Had it a few years and today it won't heat up (but the light is on!)

With an iron I think the heating element is embedded in the soleplate so either Impossible to replace or indeed source as a component?

Though never needed the sort of repair you require we have had the odd job done by this shop http://www.rsmdomesticappliances.com/electrical-domestic-appliance-repairs-surrey.php

So two thoughts:-
1) ask them if a repair is possible if so at what cost.......at least to give you a clue or two as to if economic to do so?
2) whether they know of any shop near where you live that might offer the service?

Buy a new one ...

We had one 'pop' and smoke end of last year - out of warranty, spoke to the manufacturer and they offered a replacement one at a discounted price

Thanks for that @Box Brownie they are not a million miles away so will give them a call tomorrow.

I fear it will be uneconomic to repair as a new one is only £30!
