Should I give the computers on my network a static IP address and if I should how do I do this? I am ICT dumb if no one has noticed yet.

shouldnt need to. devices such as NAS, routers (normally are by default) should though.

look in your router settings, there will normally be some DHCP settings and some options for adding reservations. or just assign the device an address outside of the DHCP range.

As Neil said, static IPs are generally used for resources around your network e.g. servers, nas, wireless point, router, dvr. Something that might not have a DNS name or where there is a technical requirement for it to be statically assigned. Normal devices e.g. phones, desktops, laptops live very happily on dhcp and it certainly makes life easier if the device is portable moving between networks e.g. home and office.

Reason I am asking is that when I enter the network area with a portable device all the other pc's stay losing their connections or the operating systems days that there is a problem with the router DNS.....

sorry that doesnt make sense. are you saying that if you connect something to the wireless then the other computer(s) (also wireless or wired?) lose connection to the internet?

That is very odd if what you're saying is that you bring in a portable device and at that point all the machines lose their DNS. The only way I can see that happening is if your portable device has the same IP as your DNS server (which in a home network will usually be your router) - so when it's present the PCs are then looking to get DNS from your phone (which won't work!) rather than the DNS/DHCP server in your router. As your router is usually the DHCP server as well it'd be very weird for it to be handing out its own IP address to a connected portable device, so unless you've hard-coded the IP of the mobile device and accidentally picked the router's IP address, I can't really see how that would happen...

I'd check what IP the portable device has and compare to your router's IP. If it isn't already, set the portable device to DHCP rather than manual IP, and it should pick up a valid IP from your DHCP server.

Different up addresses.....going switch everything off and do a complete restart in turn and see what happens

It could be an IP conflict, two devices sharing the same IP. Check each device for its IP address on the network using network scanner by SoftPerfect and compare the discovered IPs to your mobile device.

It's free and an excellent tool :)

I think is the nas unit and the router as a conflict

Update: Everything working again but I have discovered 3 unknown Ip addresses.... I think that they belong to the kids and their friends devices..... My internet is open and unsecured as I live in the middle of nowhere and as I always have clients coming and going it is a nice touch to offer them immediate access without them needing to ask for passwords etc

Alarm bells!

Secure it, even if poorly secured with a simple password it's marginally better than nothing. And having to ask for a password / key to connect to a wireless point is the general expected norm so no one is going to be fussed about asking you for it (everyone will have to do it at home, office, internet cafe, it's no biggie). Just use something simple like "guest2014", it's not a strong password but it's easy to communicate and as i say even if in the sticks better than absolutely nothing at all.

Have now secured it...... simple password as suggested....... We will see how that goes...... have given a dedicated IP to my mobile as it is dropping the signal for no reason and it seems to be working ok so far........ Thanks for all your help....Will come back if any issues
