Hi all,

After having a bit of fun with my 50mm I have decided to buy myself a small portrait kit. Just wondering if I have missed anything or how people think I should expand it.

May I point out that I dont have alot of storage space so im a bit limited at the moment.

So far i have

Set of wireless triggers
150x200cm black/white/grey backdrop
flash stand
umbrella (white)

My plan is to use my sigma flash on the flash stand for now until such a point as I have money and use for decent flash kit (this lot has cost me £70)

Does anyone have any tips or even results they have achieved with a similar setup?

Reflector, alternative brolly (silver reflective) soft box.

Looks fine  One light is a lot more versatile than you might think, and even if you have ten lights it's always the single main key-light that does the lion's share. Just add a reflector for now, white/silver. Use to lighten the shadow side, it's almost like having an extra light. Then add silver and shoot-through umbrellas for more options. White is a good choice, silver gives a harder light, shoot-through is softer. Dead cheap.

Next step would be to swap the Sigma gun for a studio head - they're not that expensive, starting around £100. That will give you a modelling light and faster recycle. Also more power, though you may not need that. You can still use the Sigma gun as well, maybe for a background light or hair light.

When it comes to getting a softbox (similar light to white umbrella, but more controlled with less spill, more versatile) suggest getting a quick-folding push-up/down type as you need to put everything away. IMHO the cheaper ones are a PITA.

I second that. Also, every time you de/construct you risk damaging the fabric.

Thanks for the advice guys. Just discovered that its chinese new year so going to have to wait for some of my stuff to be delivered JOY.

Joker i really like that second photo.
