Hello all, I am a newbie on here. I am after advice on a good starter digital SLR. Ive always wanted a Canon EOS, and I gather from ebay you can get some older models and set yourself up without spending too much.

I have just quit my job in order to spend more time with my son and I am wanting to dabble a bit in photography as a hobby really.

Im interested in photographing birds, nature, horses, sailing and just general photos really.

I currently have a fujifilm camera (just a compact) its 7MP and I have got some good results with it.

Anyway, I really want to save up and kit myself out with an SLR so any advice appreciated!

I would be interested in the replies to this as i am looking along similar lines with an slr.

I have recently bought a canon 1000d and am really pleased with it ,you will find photography a steep learning curve once you switch the camera from auto to any other settings. Your only limited by the battery life ,by that i mean just shoot away and if you don`t like the results ,delete them and try again.

Any reason for wanting a Canon? Have you tried one and other makes?
Need to know a budget as it can start from £200 to £2000
For canon, look at the 450d 500d and 550D if you want second hand. I'd stay away from the 1000d personally as its just too basic, but each to thier own.

For Nikon look at the D40 D60 D5000.
Cant help with Sony etc as I have never used them.

But yeah without a budget its impossible to answer.

Hmm well my budget would be <£400 at the moment, I haven't got a technical reason for wanting a Canon, I just like the feel of them and have heard good reports.

Yes I am comfortable in auto modes, but I know I will just have to learn on the job and with a little help from you guys no doubt in manual!

i have just started with 1000d.got 18-55 and 80-200 1.4 5-6.lenses they do everything i want at the moment.the 80-200 does quite decent long shots for the price.:thumbs::thumbs:

I have come across the comment "the 1000d is too basic" quite a bit since i got mine ,maybe i`m just a bit thick but there`s a lot of features on it i haven`t come to grips with yet, the thing you will find when asking questions is people looking far into the future of you photography journey and saying you need this and that to do all manner of shooting ,ie i have bought a tamron 70-300 which i thought would be powerful enough to get close up to wild life, but no thats not the case; to do that you probably need a 500mm lens which means selling your first born or kidney , this hobby is as expensive as you want to make it.

Well Id say a 450D with a kit lens and something like the 55-200mm. Should see you alright or a while before you decide to upgrade to something better like the 70-200 f/4.

I always wanted a Canon eos as well until i went into Jessops and held both Nikon and Canon cameras. After that there was only one camera for me and that was Nikon. The build quality is just that good in comparison. IMO.

Get yourself to a shop and have a play around.
