Yes
Just doing a sanity check to make sure I haven't got anything that wouldn't work.

A frien is back in the UK for 2 weeks from Friday so I can get him to bring some stuff back rather than pay exorbitant delivery fees.

As an intro into filters (only played with welding glass so far) would this little cover most bases and work together?

Cokin filter kit

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cokin-H250A...0M22/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1343666189&sr=8-1

Cokin p compatible wide angle holder

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Maxsima--co...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1343666689&sr=1-1

77mm variable ND

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hama-Variab...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1343666541&sr=1-1

Step down rings

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fotodiox-An...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1343666588&sr=1-1

Would the step down rings work on the filter holder?

I anticipate using them on

Sigma 10-20 (77mm)
Sigma 24-70 (72mm)
Nikon 18-105 and 70-300 (both 67mm)

A friend that has more money than sense says buy Singhray but he spent silly money on just a variable ND, more than I prepared to at this point, the above comes in well under what he paid for that one alone.

Thanks in advance

You want step up rings NOT step down!

67mm step up to 77mm
62mm step up to 77mm

77mm adaptor for the cokin holder. You will get vignetting with the 10-20 at lower end.

Are you sure you want the variable ND? I would go for 10stop myself.

I tried buying a few cokin P filters and holder when i started and to be honust it was a waste of time and money all i got was bad vignetting and poor quality photos, But some people seem to get the setup right and are happy with them.

Personaly i would look into getting a Lee foundation holder kit and wideangle mount ring with some Hitech 100 Grads like the most usefull one 0.6 hard grad and a 0.9 soft grad, Hitech also do a very decent 10 stopper as well as 3 stop solid ND filter.

OK i know the lee holder alone at around £60 is more than you would probably like to spend but look at it as a long term investment and you wont need to waste money replacing the Cokin filters in the future.

Glad I asked!

So the step ups make the Var ND usable on all the the lenses - check?

77mm adaptor to go with the wide angle holder yes?, For the 10-20, but with vignetting at say 10-14ish? No way round that I assume?

Something like this I guess.

I hear what you are saying about investment, but having put the 10-20 and 70-300 in my bag within the last month I said the spending would stop!

It was only when I took a friend down to a shop he didn't know about this evening to pick up a 550D body for his wife that I was playing with a photix variable ND whilst he paid.

That then led me to Amazon and then to here for advice.

@ Tigger, from a quick scan of Amazon then again cost comes into the equation with an ND10, any experience with NiSi?

Yes. You buy the filter to fit the biggest lens and use step up rings on the smaller ones. If you do it the other way round you are wasting half of your expensive glass!

You will get less vignetting by using a wide angle adaptor too but probably not eliminate it.

See above!

I have to second the advice about Cokin being cheap and nasty! :D

I don't know about the NiSi 10 stopper I went with the B&W which I am very happy with (didn't want to wait months for Lee or pay over the odds on ebay!)

You definately get what you pay for with filters and I only have Lee now for ND grads etc.
