I'm setting up a tabletop studio and I'm looking for some way to support the speedlite above the tabletop (lighting the subject from above).

I'm not sure what the proper name for this would be? Anyone any idea or suggestions?

I was thinking something a bit smaller and suitable for a table top but "boom arm" is the word I was looking for, cheers :-)

Isn't that overkill to hold a speedlite a foot above a subject on a tabletop?
Fasten the speedlight to a broom handle and hold it outstretched for 5 minutes. There you have it!

If I got something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181090910500

Can anyone recommend a boom arm that'd connect to it?
That small stand will do a great job to hold a light in place as a backlight / maybe a background light (a kicker) but it'd be no good "to support the speedlite above the tabletop (lighting the subject from above)", which requires a large footprint and a counterbalance (because your arms got tired)

If you really wanted to bodge it, and it really is just a speedlight (no modifier*) then you could buy a cheap lightstand, fasten your light to the handle of a sweeping brush, then find the balance point between the brush head and the flashgun and fasten the brush handle at that point to the lightstand (gaffer tape, it'd not be very versatile but it would work)

*depending what you're planning to light, I really can't see that a flashgun with no modifier is going to create a light that you'll find attractive.
