Hi all, sorry to ask this but when people say "stacking" is that multiples of shots done in the camera, when editing, or done when using a printer? Thanks

Hi, for me it's taking multiple exposures of a subject, focusing on different parts, and blending to produce a sharp image. There are plenty of videos in Youtube.

Regards.

Whereas for me it's the process of merging (stacking) multiple long exposure frames shot of the same composition in order to extend the shooting duration and any occurrent movement therein.

Commonly the technique is used to create startrail images where multiple short exposures give you more flexible control over ambient light levels or help to reduce noise that can be generated during longer exposures.

In that sense it's both a capture & post processing technique.

"Stacking" means combining multiple images in post that were taken with various settings with the camera.

There is "focus stacking"- combining multiple images with different focus points, mostly used for macro.

There is "exposure blending"- stacking/combining multiple images with various exposures.

There is "HDR"- which is similar to exposure blending but it also includes tone mapping/compression.

And there is "image stacking"- which is generally combining many underexposed low light photos (and a bunch of other manipulations). Often used with astro photography but it can also be useful for other situations.
