Hi all,

Made my first video a week or so ago. Just a little walk round our local pond/lake.

When I did the panning, I had the camcorder on my tripod with my Wimberley gimbal that I use for wildlife photography. It was tricky to get a smooth pan, even with the horizontal knob loosened. I tried a fair few times but it wasn't very easy.

Is it just practise? Or is there an attachment/head, for my tripod, I could buy that would make this process a lot easier? Is there some sort of motorised gadget I could buy? Or how about one of the many fluid heads that I've seen on the 'net (although this must require manual panning that I am hoping to avoid?)?

I don't want to spend a lot as I'm just starting to dip my toes in the video world but am aware of the "buy cheap, buy twice" saying.

Not done video since the HI 8 days but i used to start the pan early and finnish it late, then edit out the start and end sections, not that i included much panning.

Another eBay listing. And I’m aware you may not be in a position to buy. But I found this 202019776358 the most useful accessory when I used to shoot a lot of video.

If your hands are fairly steady, you can often get better results using some kind of steadicam device. They don't fit on a tripod; instead, you hold it in your hand with the camera attached to the top end, and the bottom end has weights on that are often adjustable. I've used one of these with reasonable results. I also have the C-shaped one where the camera is mounted on the bottom part, and they're not as steady; they're more aimed at people who want to move quickly, taking running shots for example.

Thank you for that Bazza, it looks like the perfect thing to use tbh.

I may take you up on the offer, will have to have a think about it (y)

Thank you Trevor, more than I would be willing to pay though. Besides, it looks like an alien device and I can't really fathom out what it does or how I would use it lol :D

Yep. It enables you to control the camera via the pan bar. On/Off. Zoom in and out. Saves having to touch the camcorder while recording.
Your camera must have a LANC socket (check before buying)

why not just get a pistol grip for your camcorder. then you can hold it a lot steadier with both hands Tat is what I now use mine cost about £7

Thanks for the thought Bazza. It's not really the steadiness though, it's the continual panning at the constant same speed that I'm looking to achieve (y)

Maybe I could speed up/slow down certain frames in PP?
 
just taken this with pistol grip on camcorder. Done quickly as a demo Constant panning at same speed is something you can learn as shown. Just practise like anything in photography

As i say I can show you how if you decide to visit. Panning a still subject (view) is harder than panning a moving one

Shutter speed 125 fps 50. the FPS is set in the camcorder of mine

i had trouble with juddering at first because i was panning too fast and had a slow shutter speed. Mastered that with faster fps ,then smoothed out any left with Adobe premier Elements 14. As I said this was just a very quick effort as a demo. The pistol grip is light and doesn't take up much room and a lot cheaper
