SSD how to?

Hi, OK i can change a graphics card, a power supply put in and take a hard drive but have no idea about the ins and outs of changing a bog standard hard drive for an SSD. on a computer.
My drives are 3.5 but all the SSD's I have found state 2.5 as the fitting size so how do you place an SSD in the slot for a SATA drive?
Easy question I no but if you don't no like me there is no easy answer.

What are you going to us it for, os only, os and apps or os,apps and data.?

What size is the drive already in the pc?

Hi,
There will be OS and photo software, PS CS 6, L/R 5 etc
Don't use this computer for anything else except photography.
I do have two additional SATA drives installed so space is not an issue as far as back-up of photos is concerned.

If using win 7 you will probably want a 128gb one, not sure how much space ps takes but I am running osx ml with LR4, iphoto, I movies and other but on a 64gb one.

Mine is blu-tacked to the bottom of the 3.5 tray, you don't really need a dedicated bracket
 
You want more than a 64gb one. I bought a 64gb version and it was barely enough for the OS after all the windows updates.

I'm not sure if the ocz agility series is better now but when I was looking to buy my first SSD, the sales guy at overclockers warned me away from them...

I have an old ocz bracket I could post to you if you want it?

Agree with this - I have a 128Gb SSD running O/S and programs only - no data - I only have 37Gb free...

Mine (250Gb) is simply stuck in a HDD bay with a double sided sticky foam pad.

I have a 128gb in my laptop and it holds the OS, Photoshop, dreamweaver, ms office and a load of files, with about 40gb free...

Got a 512gb in the main rig because of all my games.

Both of the drives are crucial m4's, the new firmware gives it a real speed boost.
 
Hi, Many thanks for all the info.
I have had a read on some of the different makes and it seems that VFM can be found in the OCZ Vertex 450 Series.
Have found one at a good price that can be sent to me here in Greece, (Living here can sometimes be a challenge to buy from the UK)
I also found an article that may interest some of you concerning speeding up the SSD even more http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/ocz_vertex_450_ssd_benchmark_review_test,6.html
although for the OCZ I would assume it applies to other makes also.

lol at 60 not being enough, i was running one until recently and its loads of room when managed correctly :D

agreed with everyone else, blue peter SSD mountings are the way forward.

I purchased a 128 GB as I have two SATA 300GB also installed so should be enough for what I do:thumbs:

yeah i run twin 128 these days but i never had any bother with a 60 for OS and programs, that was running alongside a 1tb mechanical though for files.

larger SSD are generally faster though.

+1!!!

Same size drive, LR5 & PSE11 plus a few other minor programs and I've got pretty much the same space available.

In hindsight perhaps I should have gone bigger but it was a case of "where do you stop" when I was configuring my new machine :lol:

You might want to have a look at how many Restore Points you have, that can take up a fair bit of memory.
