How far do you go on cleaning up faces in portraits?

Do you leave them natural or clean them up?

I've a few photographs that could do with some work, but I don't want to offend.

If it's a zit, I clean it up. If it's a cold sore, I clean it up. If it's a scabby bit, I clean it up.

if it's a scar, I leave it unless asked.

basically, temporary things get removed. I just think back to school photos...I was always ill, and had cold sores and so on. Wish they'd have taken them out in photoshop, but it wasn't invented back then! :)

Same as Graig. I would remove temporary things. I allways did this on individual portraits. But not on group or school shots. Even before digital. Normaly done at the printing stage. Large format 10 x 8 could be done on neg.

zits and blackheads are just things that come and go... we have good days, we have bad days. I remove them unless there's a good reason to leave them in.

If we're talking portraits rather than news:
  • Making the subject feel and look relaxed
  • Posing
  • lighting
  • Makeup and hair (if necessary)
  • Retouching

Are all the ways we make our subjects look their best, works for them and us (better pictures = more referrals and higher prices).

I find it odd that the question needs asking tbh:shrug:
