When using the Canon 40d, I was under the impression that when spot metering, it was always from the central at point area ( the circle) not from the AF point you choose for the shot.

Am I right or is the info I have read correct?
 
I think only the Centre Weighted Spot Metering does it from the centre spot.

I think the one you have chosen exposes for the focus point you have chosen.

I disagree, I think the OP is correct. Partial metering is between the two AF points above and below the centre AF point. Spot metering uses the circle around the central AF and no where else (AFAIK)

· Evaluative metering (linkable to any AF point)
· Partial metering (approx. 9% of viewfinder at center)
· Spot metering (approx. 3.8% of viewfinder at center)
· Center-weighted average metering

450D is the same; I use exposure lock with the centre of the viewfinder over the subject, the recompose as required.

I didn't know that, how do you link to an AF point?
