Does anyone know the ins and outs of this. The reason I ask is, as an amateur, how would you be able to take pictures at golf events the 'other' side of the ropes. Is it a case of you have to be a pro, pay for the privilege, be registered with an agency, apply to the event organiser itself??

Apply to the event organiser.
Some have links on their websites to their media rep.
Ring the location and ask questions, get the info you need then write
to the correct person.

Yep, you just about covered all the bases there. In the case of major events, all of the above.

Start small and work your way up - hone your skills on local events where you don't have to pay. If you get good, start touting your work to the agencies or to specialist mags. If you ARE any good, they may start sending you to events (but you'll still cover your own expenses to begin with). Eventually, after years of hard work and terminal cash-flow crises, they'll **** you off and employ some spotted-d1ck with green hair whose dad knows the editor... eh what? Bitter..me?

Amazing... nearly 8 years and I'm still seething about it...

As above, you need permission from the event organiser.

How do they go on regarding model release etc..For example, I take a picture of Tiger Woods and I want to place it on Fotolia, how on earth do you get him to sign it??

You don't have to. Personalities at open events accept that they'll be photographed.
You only have to obtain MR's if you take a random image of someone and use it for advertising.
If I take an image of spectators at an event and it gets published in a magazine, tough - they were in public.

If you set up an image of someone next to a car and then use that image to advertise the car, then you'd need a release.

Do a web-search if you need to know more as it's very complicated in some aspects and very simple in others.

I read something about this the other day elsewhere (well similar, it was actually motorsports related so they wanted access to track behind the tyrewalls) - and someone wrote back asking why they thought they should get preferential treatment because of their hobby...and I thought that was a fair a point. What would happen if we all wrote to event organisers doing it?

TBH I don't reckon you'll get anywhere without a press pass or equivalent, but good luck anyway :D
