Hi,

I am looking to do some sports photography in the new year and would love to hear some recommendations on specific equipment.
I am still using my original Canon EOS 1000D as I can't afford a new camera just now, though I want to pick up a couple of lenses for next year.

Can anyone recommend a large aperture telephoto lens that will not break the bank?

I have been looking at the ef-s 55-250mm f/4-5.6 lens which is great for distance but not as wide aperture.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Depends on your budget and what sport.

70-200 f2.8 with or without IS OR
70-200 f4 with or without IS.

Prices for these lenses will range between £500-£2100

£500 would be the upper end of my budget just now, the sport is Crossfit.
It's predominantly indoor in well lit facilities, though it is faced paced so would need something that works well at fast shutter speeds.

Never heard of crossfit, but being indoors you ideally want to be looking at f2.8 which you're going to struggle to get on a £500 budget.

Wex have a second hand 70-200 f2.8 IS L for £545

Sigma do a 70-200 f2.8 which starts at around £720 new so a used one of these may well be within budget.

You may be able to get away with an f4 which will be within budget, but that going to require upping your ISO. I don't know what the ISO performance of the 1000D is but it's an entry level camera so I assume it's not great.

I think the highest ISO on a 1000D is 1600 - how usable that will be I'm not sure. A lens with a wide aperture is definitely the way to go. Do you need that much zoom if you are indoors? Can you get closer to the subject? If you can then there are plenty of less expensive zoom lenses that won't be 'telephoto' but may do the job better.

I currently only have a 1200D, whilst I agree that using whatever camera you have is good advice, might you be better looking at upgrading the body? Even splitting your budget and finding a second hand body?

24-70 best lens for crossfit

But on a budget - indoor- with iso 1600.. I would go for the 35mm f2
