Week 1: Accomodation

It had to wait until this morning for me to get out and photograph this week but here is my first ever 52 post!

Accomodation (5 of 8) by Spooky 173, on Flickr

This came about by more by accident than a deliberate attempt to think outside the box. I had resolved myself to go and shoot Brocket Hall with great visions of the hall being reflected in the lake but whilst walking around the estate I was taken by the golfer's etiquette towards each other - and indeed anyone else wakling / jogging around the estate. I was also taken by the morning light that reflected from the frosty ground and almost silhouetted the players.

I chose this image from the selection shot this morning because of the player in the background's gesture - waving for his partner to play the shot - and the fact that he is 'signposted' by the two in the foreground waiting to tee off.

If anyone is interested, the shots of Brocket Hall and the other golfer shots can be found at my Flickr site.

Really like the composition and atmospheric quailty of this pic. Would it be worth trying a B&W conversion?

I think I prefer the original Simon. The B&W conversion seems to take some of the atmosphere out of the image for me. I think maybe it's the fact that the colour pic has that faded antique look to it.

I agree - I think the colour cast caused by the glare of the sun on the frost gives it that kind of antiquated look - almost 70s retro-esque.

It was worth a tweak or two though.

Not feeling terribly inspired, man flu has robbed me of a couple of days shooting and this theme is very similar to the POTY January one...

Anyhow, decided to play around with DOF and a still life study, so ventured downstairs, stole a few of the wife's new pencils and shot this.

Apologies for not uploading but head could not cope with a bright monitor.

Hi Simon, very good pair of pics, and each very different. Like them both.

Week 1: very atmospheric and good composition. Not sure if I prefer the original or the B+W. You lose some detail in the B+W, but the semi-silhouette works well. The limited DOF adds to the shot.

Week 2: that's a great still life. it's the sort of thing I sometimes try but don't quite get right. Love the colour - did you do any PP on that? Also really like the imaginative way you've arranged the pencils - works very well. I could see this as a professional stock photo.

Thanks for the comments. The PP on the pencils was done in light room: a little vibrancy, punch and contrast finished with a subtle vignette.

The pencils shot is a cracking take on the old favourite. I really like the golf shot but I can't really see what it has to do with accomodation. Sorry.

Hi there

I love the pencil shot...how long did it take you to set them up so perfectly:lol: Great colors

couple of nice shots there ;) I like them and I like your thought process  look forward to seeing your next one well done

Thanks for the comments; it seems the pencil image has gone down well. It took me about 5 mins to set them up and then another 10 to contort myself into getting the composition! It was taken on my nifty fifty in a fairly tight space.

It refers to the way golfers accommodate each other on the course; in this case the two guys in the foreground are allowing the other two to finish the hole. The guy in the background is gesticulating to someone else that they can play their shot. So, nothing to do with houses, more to do with an attitude.

Suddenly I am aware of sounding arty!

Week 1. Not sure about this one. The bright sun has blown the highlights, almost making the figures silhouettes, but not quite. Probably because you were almost straight on to the sun. Love the arty description.

Week 2. I like this. A simple looking shot that must have taken some patience to set up.

Got ya!! The golfer in the distance is inviting the others to play through. Very accomodating. Great play on the theme. :)

Week 3: Style

This is getting hard - not the taking so much but more the uploading. Anyhow, here is my style entry. The idea is 80's Style as I happened to have a shoot with an 80's retro/covers band who wanted new images for their website and promotional use.

Am hoping drastic PS manipulation is OK - this is a combination of three images done more as a test run than anything final; there are 6 members of the group in total but I wanted to make sure they were happy with this concept before doing the work with all six.

There are another couple of images from the shoot on my Flickr account.

Our Friends Electric (half of them)

Style (3 of 3) by Spooky 173, on Flickr

I like this shot as I had the concept in mind when photographing each of them individually. I was deliberately shooting with a prime lens (50mm) and had the camera locked off on a tripod so that when it came to merging them in PS I would not have different perspectives / focal lengths and heights to deal with.

I was forced to shoot the group shots in this way as one member of the band was not able to make it to the session and I had to think of ways to be able to PS him in later.

I have shown the band this concept and they really like it - and fortunately I was able to shoot the missing member this week. The finished artefact will be posted up in the portraits forum once I have completed the whole thing.

Really liking your week 3 entry, seemless between each photo. I can understand why the band like it too, very contemporary. Keep them coming
