I'm not going to lie, I'm no fan of spiders, I wouldn't hurt one (although I have done when woken by one on my face on 3 seperate occasions) but I don't like them.

I do have a dilemma though. Last year, in my hide, which to be fair, is prime spider territory, damp (some of the time) and warm during summer. Last year, I noticed 2 big ones, one had a fat body, the other was slimmer but both roughly the same 2 inch or so diameter. There may have been more but I'm guessing it was just this 2.

I was ok with their presence, as long as I knew where they were, I could see them 90% of the time. I left the hide when I couldn't. I know, wimp.

The bigger fatter one lived in an old reclining, leather chair, she would sit on it at the top or on her web, between the chair and the hide wall. This chair has now become mouldy, it's way past its best and I would like to remove it. Seriously, I am not comfortable with them running around. I'm thinking that this might be a good time to remove the chair as it's pretty cold here at the moment, it's been as low as -9 here this last few weeks. it's a little milder at the moment though, probably about 3 or 4 degrees overnight.

Am I likely to see the spider at the moment if I move the chair? I would do a runner if I did. It's funny I know but I do have a problem with them, especially as big as this one.

The chair has to go before Spring, I should man up  :$ really, or send my 9 year old out to deal with it. ;)

Not likely to see it when it's so cold....
Ya big Jessie.....
Get Nic and Tegan to remove the chair....

Big spiders are normally female ,
Don't get to friendly as they eat their partners after doing the deed

Most spiders are pretty dormant in cold weather. A few of the native species in the UK can give you a nip, but none are considered dangerous. I'd just go ahead and move the chair during the winter.

Get some peppermint spray, spiders aren't keen on it
Some people swear by horse chestnuts but I've never found they work

I find a blow torch usually moves them on Dale - but in your case a 9 year old will suffice :LOL::LOL:

Les :)

I’ve got a boris in the corner above my bed. It’s not moved for a week. I’m the same, don’t mind them as long as they’re not on me.

A Boris- surely not ?? :LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL:

Lol, thanks for the replies.

I think I'll be brave today and move the chair, Wifey can help and then I'll leave it outside until I can get to the dump. The plan is to dismantle it (warily) as it's a steel frame and practically goes flat. I dismantled the sofa a few years ago and the whole thing fitted in our estate car and made the trip to the dump.

I have to know this chair is spider free before it goes in the car though, that thing dropping down from the sunvisor whilst I'm doing 70 isn't going to end well, for the spider or me.

:plus1: for me.

The chair has been moved, I puffed out my chest, cleared a route so that I wouldn't have to stop and basically rolled it out of the hide and along the garden to it's spot where it will be dismantled, or I may just pay the council uplift fee.

From a nature point of view, there were loads of webs, or more just one big one. Lots of shed skins too and even a slug, dead in the web, which looked like it had been eaten by the spider. :runaway:

There was also a spider's body on the floor, not a skin and it looked very fresh, like it had not long died but I'm certain it wasn't the resident one as it had a much slimmer body but still about 1.5 - 2 inches diameter. I'm not sure where the resident one is, maybe it's tucked up in the chair somewhere or hopefully, just moved on somehwere else.

Peppermint spray ordered for the hide.

Dale I was going to say to ask your 9 year old, but looks like all is done and dusted.
Very Brave Dale.
