I have a canon 90d and a canon speedlite 550EX, what is the best way to use the flash off camera without having being triggered by the on board flash?

I've found the easiest way is to use an off camera cord or wireless triggers (depending on distance you need flash from camera) Theres of of triggers about and depending on budget you can manual only or full ETTL.

If you are OK using manual flash power, then the answer is easy: get a pair of Yungnuo RF603 CIIs.

They're cheap, robust and function well.

If you want to go down the e-TTL route it's more complicated.

The simplest would be a Canon ST-E2 unit. But that uses Infrared triggering, with all its drawbacks (range, angles etc).

Otherwise you are looking at a third-party TTL trigger for Canon - and that is a bit of a cowboy market for flash units that old.

Even the product that should stand out head and shoulders above the rest (The Pocket Wizards Flex system) is frankly bloody dire.

As above, the simple solution is a simple pair of manual triggers.

I have to admit I spent years with the increasingly simple to use ETTL triggers, but nowadays, if I’m using remote flash it’s more likely to be in a more fixed environment and Manual works better than TTL in that situation.

I've got a few different ones, but the ones I actually carry mostly are similar to this set LINK I've got 2 recievers instead of three. I carry these mostly because they take up no room and weigh nothing.

Ok you have to shoot manual flash, but I started with manual only film cameras and flash so not an issue for me.
In the real world they work very well. I've gone about 30 or 40 yards and they still work. They also have the big advantage of working with any camera or flashgun provided the hotshoe has the centre contact. I can use Nikon flashes with Canon cameras, so if i'm out with mates they can just borrow the setup or we can use each others flashes if we need.

I've got the more advanced (and expensive) systems but they take up more room and some are complicated to set up the first time. These couldnt be easier to use. Switch on, turn on the flash, switch flash to manual and dial the power up and down till your happy
