Has anyone modified the pouch that comes with the 430 & 580 flashes to be able to mount on the shoulder strap of a rucksack?

They're a nice pouch but its always baffled me why it doesn't have something as simple as a belt loop. Think Tank do a bag called "Strobe stuff" but I don't mind getting all Heath Robinson on one but prefer a solution before I start cutting stuff up :bonk:

No it doesn't unfortunately, I might just punch a hole through it and put a Caribena on it like you say, trouble is it's not quite big enough to have the stofen on it at the same time. I see Lowepro make one but again it's something silly like £40 :(

The pouches as supplied for flashes are designed to protect your FG in your bag. They simply aren't strong enough for putting on a belt or rucksack. I use a Lowepro Sliplock pouch which DOES attach to your belt and bag, and rucksack. Big enough for any flash plus spare batteries, stofen, cord etc. I think it's the 60 AW.

I have a Tamrac one similar to this for one of my SB800 guns, It carries it complete with the stofen on, no problem. It's also taken some bashing and is far superior from a protection point of view than the original manufacturers item, as Barry mentioned.

The Nikon pouches for SB-6/7/8/900 all have a loop on them - maybe see if there are any going on eBay or in the want-ads here?

Only problem is the fact they are "soft" cases, and don't take to well to the rough and tumble.

True, but the OP was asking if anyone had modded the Canon equivalent - I had assumed (possibly incorrectly) that they're the same(ish) as far as durability goes....

You're probably right Spen, it was only the fact that the case was to be hung externally on a backpack, and from experience *cough* they tend to fair better in cases that are a little more rigid such as the Tamrac etc.
The originals are great in another bag, and in all honesty, the 900 case is far more resiliant to knocks than the 800 or 600, and I'd likely use a 900 on the outside of a backpack without any real concerns.
The 800 and 600? Well, shall we say it cost me far more than the Tamrac case to find out :bonk:

Well thats what we are answering, no, because they are not up to the job, and personaly I would not trust my speedlight hanging from my belt or bag using a pouch that will/should/may not be strong enough.
Punching holes, making belt slits or whatever will only weaken the pouch, probably.

We're not talking long term carrying here just when in use and to hand, I normally have the camera clipped to my left shoulder strap and was looking for a handy way to have the flash ready to go. I'll see what I can find, thanks all :)

There's Stanley workman's belt with pouches on it that will hold either one or two speedlights, costs something like a fiver....

I bought this one  dead like the canon pouch pretty good for the price fits a 430 EX11 like a glove..and fits a 580ex11 tight but still fits it has a loop attachment at the back so would hook on to a belt or bag good choice for £6.99 ;) http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0036EIA04
