Hi I was testing/playing around last night trying create large shadows e.g.: like the ones you see in film noir scene's(Man in rain coat and trilby). I did a couple like that and then thought what else I could use.Yes I know the location is not the best but I don't look a complete idiot doing this in our back garden :-)
My question is___if I wanted a bit more ambient light in the image and as in this case I was already at my lowest shutter speed I was comfy with 1/60th. Would I have to use a higher iso but then lower the flash power as if I understand this correctly the iso and aperture would both effect the flash input too.
The settings were.

1/160th f7.1 iso 100 flash_ manual 1/2 power

The image below is shot at 1/160th but I did try some @ 1/60th wanted more ambient got confused and packed up.

Tripod mount the Camera and drop your shutter speed down. The flash will still do what it needs to do and you will have more ambient.
Thanks Gaz. Yep I get that for the most part shutter effects ambient and aperture effects flash. So what happens if I don't want to drop below 1/60th as I am hand holding ?
What other way do you use to just up the ambient and not effect the flash component.

Gaz

ps:

Cool face painting :-)

Yes, my understanding is that should work fine.

The beauty of digital is that you can always just try it and see (immediately) if it works, to find the right combination for the effect you want.

Thank you. Will try some more.

Higher iso =more noise though. I would still try to place the camera on something and experiment with low shutter speed.

Yes I agree with what your saying it's just sometimesyou don't have the tripod with you.
