For a while now Apple has supported speech to text via the web using something not dissimilar to the Siri voice recognition software . To do this you had to have web access and were limited to something like 30 seconds worth of speech at a time. If you now go to system preferences, and go to the speech and dictation settings you will find an option to download A piece of software that will allow you to use speech to text without the need of Internet connection or any apparent time limit

It's a fairly large download just under 800 MB. But the beauty of it is that listens to what you say and corrects itself within the context of the item.

It works in a number of applications including the talk photography site and I have dictated this thread from within Firefox.

The app is interactive which means that you can both speak and type at the same time. It does make the occasional error but it is interesting to watch it agree with what has already typed and make the necessary corrections. On the whole of this text it has only made five small errors. Not bad for a piece of free software
