Spare tyre

Seeking opinions on the following matter.

I bought my car back two years ago, luckily l have had no issues with my car until last night. I got a flat tyre on the way home, so I go to change my tyre with the spare that I had in the boot. On undoing the flat tyre and then trying to fit the spare tyre I found out the wheel was the wrong type. My car has 4 wheel nuts and the spare tyre was for a car with 5 wheel nuts. Luckily I have breakdown cover and they were able to get me home (to late to get to a garage).

Now I will be speaking to trading standards later today to see what my rights are in this situation, but surely the dealership selling the car (second hand car) should check this as they are selling it? Or am I being totally unreasonable in thinking it is something that they should have checked?

Believe me it is something I will check from now on when I buy a second hand car again, it is just not on my current check list when buying a car to check the spare will actually fit!

Indeed, you would be right to expect them to have checked this. That said the check probably went as far as checking the spare was present and inflated!

However two years down the line I can't see you getting anywhere as you would be hard pressed to prove that the dealership were at fault. Was it a main dealer? If so why not just give customer service a call and talk to them? Some main dealers can be very accommodating.

I don't expect them to do anything and will be contacting them later today but it is worth a try as I cannot get to work, without it taking 2hours on public transport.

Its a nationwide dealership.

Well good luck anyway, hopefully the dealership will do the right thing and sort you out.

Thanks.

It's a day off work to get to the local garage for new tyre and then a scrap yard hunt for a new spare wheel/tyre

I very much doubt you will get anywhere, it's not a legal requirement to have a spare wheel and many new cars are now sold without them or you get those
emergency thin things.
I did check mine when I bought the car and do regularly check the tyre pressure when I do the others, I have alloy wheels on the car but the spare is a standard steel

A spare wheel should cost you £20 from a scrap yard. I got four by searching on here
http://www.1stchoice.co.uk/
4 wheels for £90 delivered. Is the tyre the same size as the other four? If so just get it changed over. Doubt you will get any joy from the garage.

A guy I worked with brought a Seat and as they didn't come with a spare he brought one separately, at the same time he got the car, Had a quick look (to make sure they had put one in) when he picked up the car. a short while later he got a puncture and the same thing as the OP 5 studs on car 4 holes on skinny spare. In this case they did replace the spare with the correct one and gave him a free service on top.

Here was me thinking you had put on weight...

Haha, I am getting that way if I am not careful.

Spoke to the dealership, they are going to sort me a new wheel out. But I will have to get a tyre for it (the tyres where exactly the same size so just swapped it), probably look at a part worn for the spare as I will only use it sparingly.

It's not a Renault by any chance is it? I was speaking a van driver a couple of weeks ago who had a puncture on his brand new Kangoo van. That had the wrong spare wheel fitted from the factory.

Yes it is a Renault, spoke to the dealership and they have replaced the wheel. It is an inch smaller than my alloys thou which is confusing but I assume when I go get a tyre for it they will know the right size to put on it for me?
