Spare batteries

Need to get a spare(s) battery for my Nikon D40. Seen loads of compatible ones from an auction site ranging in price from £2- £10, or do I go Nikon only? I was thinking of having a couple of spares for emergencies. I know they are no doubt going to lose charge more quickly, but wanted to get opinions.
