I've lived at my current home for just over 6 years and have been back into photography for around 3. In that time I've wanted a subject (wildlife) to concentrate on regularly so that I can put more emphasis onto planning shots.

Unfortunately the only real locations for such things are a good 20-30 minute drive away so it's not exactly something I can do spur of the moment or easily plan around my family and working life.

So, how annoyed do you think I am that I stumbled across a b****y great big nature reserve only half a mile away from my house? No signs, nothing in the local rag and nobody else I know knew it existed. It was only a spurious (and completely unrelated) google search that brought it up.

It apparently has Kingfishers, 14 species of Dragonfly, numerous rare birds, Great Crested Newts and bucket loads of Butterflies.

So, how well do you know your surroundings? Because I apparently haven't got a clue! :(

Been there this summer actually....

About half a mile where I live (and I've lived in the same village for 6 years) I've only just found out and seen with my own eyes, a pair of kingfishers just up the road from me :bang:

I know the feeling, at least you have found it now sounds like it could be worth a trip there though :)

My god, if thats all you have to be annoyed about, you've lead a sheltered life

I will say however, that I am guilty of not knowing my surrounding area at all. Ok, we've only lived here 10 months, but I only know my route to and from work :D

I still find new things round our way - parks, interesting buildings, bits of hitory etc makes life a little more interesting when you stumble upon them :)

where abouts is this place?

Check your local OS maps for footpaths, you'd be surprised what you find alond some of them. Try geocaching, a great way to find things of interest you never knew existed.

John, we'll have to get our heads together someday to discuss the beauty of the Tamworth area.

Oh come of it guys... you know I've had a rough time recently and if I want to be annoyed at something so petty then  ;)

Anyway, the glass isn't half empty... it's twice as big as it needs to be

I saw a couple yesterday at their church re next Saturday's Wedding shoot

"Are you up for a bit of fun?" - asks I, "Yes, but what do you mean?" - they reply...

"How about you sitting in the leg-stocks as a play on 'Wedlock'?" - says I

"What leg-stocks?" - they reply, somewhat bemused

They've been going to this church every Sunday for 8 months and not noticed the ancient (and working!) leg-stocks in the church grounds, even though they can be seen from the church and the gateway entrance!!!

thanks Nathan will have to look into this!

Google Maps is fantastic for surveying places...I've found so much stuff local to me with it :)

I live in Milton Keynes, yes the place with the roundabouts and concrete cows :$ however, it's not so well known that the river Ouse and Grand Union Canal run though here, and there are also various walks and nature reserves within walking distance of most areas.

The area I live in for example, as I found out about a month ago, is a 15 minute walk from the Ouse valley park, and a lake with a hide built for public access.

It's surprising what you don't know !

So much around my area (landscape wise) in North Devon, just can not get the time to visit these lovely areas.

never mind getting annoyed - make sure your camera battery is charged up and get out there :D

Kingfishers on your doorstep eh? Fantastic :woot:

Surely you should be overjoyed at finding that? A place to take pics that other people might not find and that should be relatively quiet? :)

I'd love to find somewhere like that near me.

I spent ages looking at the local area on Google Earth when we moved in here, found a few good spots, but have been shown a ton more by local people, then again round here the mix of yorkshire none-shyness and old people none-shyness means that anyone who sees you with a camera tells you of "this spot you must visit"

I Spent several years GeoDashing. The world was divided into 100km squares and each month a computer randomly put a point inside each square. You had to get close to score points.

Amazing how much of your local area you suddenly discover this way :D

That and getting back on my pushbike

Totally. I was actually going for irony in my original post :D

I'm just annoyed really that I've spent so long travelling to places when I could be concentrating on this. Plus we now have junior to look after so I don't now have as much time.

Still, plenty of walks though there ahead, so I'll ensure the camera goes with me at all times.

I don't know how long you have lived here or where but there is also a lot of history going on that isn't even marked
like the old roman settlement roughly at the junction of the A5 and watling street (V4) nothing really left of it now though and I only stumbled on it by accident.
I have lived here for years and only found "Grafton park" by accident recently! So yes I know what you mean
Though I do walk the dogs along the "ouse valley park" sometimes

There are interesting places around us all simply open your eyes and even the local car boot is interesting

I live in the Fens and would just love your problem:lol:

Where I live you just can't get any decent shots - too many telegraph poles, pylons and damned wind turbines :bang:

Its amazing what you find when your your walking in the woods I always seem to come across hidden lakes.
