I've been offered a good condition compact mirrorless Sony ZV-E10. Whilst this is a handy pocketable camera I thought of using it as a webcam for Zoom/Teams meetings, since I can position it rather better than using the standard fixed camera in the computer display.

It has both USB and HDMI outputs, although the latter doesn't get a mention in the spec sheet.

The USB port output is 1280 x 720 (=720p?) Can anyone tell me if the HDMI socket will output full 1080 HD when used for streaming? OK I will need a capture card but that shouldn't be a problem. The only other difficulty is whether it is possible to remove the menu display otherwise it may overlay the transmission.

Sony have just brought out the ZV1-II which is a similar camera but it's not clear whether that would offer any improvement over the ZV-E10 for the above purpose.

Any help appreciated.

Save yourself hassle and buy an external HD webcam.

It's not any hassle. It's going cheap, I get the benefits of a continuous - not stepped - optical zoom, built in mic and also a pocket camera I can use for other purposes. Whilst there are some good webcams about, the better ones aren't cheap and most are ultra wide with limited software zooming.

This seemed a reasonable deal if it worked.

Sony do also support using their cameras as a webcam with no additional equipment so you could use the camera without the capture card:

Thanks for this - very helpful. :)

I notice that whilst Sony say the Windows version of the Imaging Edge Webcam software is not compatible with ARM based processors, they do not say that it IS compatible with Apple's M-Series ARM based processors. Have you any idea whether it is? I would assume it is but a lot of non ARM based software will run via the Mac emulator but you can end up with a pile of grief if it refuses.....

I agree the way that reads to me is that it does support ARM processors on Apple since it includes support for two OSX versions that are both ARM and X86 with no exclusion mentioned but I've seen people here complaining about lack of proper support for Apple platforms so I'd lean towards there not being ARM support but it's nothing more than a guess. I don't have an ARM based Apple PC myself but the Imaging Edge software is free to download so you should be able to see how the basic part of it runs on your system.

I agree Sony have have always been a bit half hearted with their Mac support. I don't see why I should need the Sony software as it suggests a USB connection. I'll try the HDMI connection first and if that works OK leave well alone.

Thank you for the help. Much appreciated.

If you have HDMI capture then you won't need the Sony software at all, I've used the Sony software to use my cameras as a webcam and found it handy just being able to use the USB connection.
