Ok not swinging but at least they've come out at last
Its taken them awhile but the new Sony (*Cough* Minolta) has been announced and the stats are pretty impressive for a "entry level" camera, 10 Mega pixels (maybe the same as d200), in body anti shake, anti dust system 2.5" high(ish) res LCD

first preview here camera and kit lens to be sold for $1000 although god alone knows what that'll be over here in the UK

sony like to make a bit of money...

I have to say it looks really well spec'd. I was reading the other day that what lies behind this is that with camera phones fast becoming really useable, there's a drop in compact sales forseen, whereas they don't see the same happening with the pro/enthusiast DSLR market and Sony are wanting to get into this highly lucrative sector.

This Sony DSLR can only be good for prices if it's pitched against entry level cameras from Canon and Nikon at the right price.

Says it uses the CCD from the D200, hopefully without the banding issues :D

Looks like a good camera that, be very interested in the proper reviews. :)

"You can't use standard NP-FM50 batteries in the A100."

That sounds like Sony!

On paper it looks like a really good camera, no dust on the sensor, built in IS, all good really. No doubt sony will balls it up somehow.....

Betamax,
Minidisc,
PS3,
The MP3 Revolution,

I'm sure there are more......

I'm surprised they didnt disappear ages ago with marketing decisions like those........

There was a bit of talk about this on a minolta forum outcome was the banding was caused by a 4 channel thingamy that the sony doesn't have not the ccd itself and the issue's been fixed now ........... so they say :)
Not half as interested as me in the reviews of the glass they're launching as well as they'll fit my cam :)

CT : if thats true then sony have been looking into the furure quite well as they've been in bed with minolta for a while now ..... although those jap phones are legues ahead of what we see here.

Ghandi : Wasn't anything wrong with betamax its just the public didn't know that :) First surprise for me no memory stick slot! I put that down to heavy influences from Minolta's design team long may it continue :)

This could be good news for every one, if the camera delivers. Rumours elsewhere are putting the body at about £599 body only. That's about £150 more than the 350D, 250 less than the 30D but you're getting, on the face of it, a far higher spec. That could just begin to eat into some of the Canon Market. Unless of course they push the specs up to compete or discount the higher models. Lets hope so :)

A picture in digital photo mag of the alpha range and it looks like they are going to release white lenses

What will Canon do now that someone else is going for the instant visual recognition that the white colouring gives.

laugh when they see the sea of white CANON lenses at a particular situation and no sony lenses in sight............

the white on canons lenses, means something, not simply to stand out as no doubt the sony lenses will be

*cranks steam powered minidisk player* GREAT IDEA!

white lenses are not specific to canon. minolta had several white lenses in their line up, and these sony lenses are just rebadged minoltas.

I'm gradually reaching the conclusion that it means very expensive product which isn't necessarily better than third party, it might be, but not necessarily. ;)

nikon make white lenses too, it's just many prefer the black ones. and the white ones are hard to get i think.

good luck to sony, it'll be nice to see another big player if it all goes well for them.

Sony do tend to make somwhat odd decisions, but they SHOULD be able to keep this one going as its an established brand

*waves Blu-ray flag* Tis the future i tells ya!

sonys latest attack on the gaming industry (attempting to make it unlawful to sell or trade in used video games) means i will NEVER EVER buy anything branded as sony and i strongly advice other people to do the same (although i have a feeling the gaming industry will vote with their feet and buy elsewhere anyway) until sony realise what a bunch of cocks they're being

aye thats an odd move isnt it, they seem to be slightly out of touch

its rediculous, especially when you consider that the computer games sector is fueled by teenagers who have very little money, the fact they can trade in the game once they've completed it and get a new one makes a console very appealing, without that everyone will jump ship to the xbox360 or the nintendo WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE *breathes* EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee *goes blue* eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee *falls over* where they can sell the game on and buy the next title
