Sony alpha v Minolta
Hi all
Being new to photography I'm pricing up zoom lens'. Can anyone tell me if there is a huge difference in quality between a Sony alpha lens and a Minolta 75-300?
Any advice appreciated.

some Minolta is better build quality then Sony cheap plastic!! like primes 50mm lens

They will be basically the same lens, the Sony 75-300 is just a rebadged Minolta!

Chris, I think that some of the Minolta lenses, particularly the ones from the mid 1980s are completely different in terms of quality and performance

The Minolta that Sony re-badged was the 75-300 4.5-5.6 d.

The 'original' 75-300 4.5-5.6 was a quite different construction, all metal, and weighed 865g (compared to 460g for the 'd'). It was this original version that is sometimes referred to as the 'big beercan' as it is similar in build to the 70-210 f4 'beercan'.

Oh yeah the "Big Beercan" 75-300 from the 80's still be a beast compared to the later ones!
I was really meaning the newer Minolta 75-300 which is the version rebadged as Sony.

:eek:Some of those later lenses are real horrors Chris, like the short zoom with built in, retractable lens cap.

That's the one I was thinking of Jonathan, wish I had one, but have to keep a low profile (if you know what I mean) on the buying front - the missus thinks that I have a "lens collection", which is growing daily:naughty:

I know the feeling - unfortunately the next lens I'm after is the 70-400G, so not only will it take some work to gather the funds, it will also be fairly obvious that it's not just a lens she hasn't noticed before :help:

Paint it black :D

go for the sony 70-300G SSM, much better then the 75-300

But also a lot more expensive...

Other options to consider would be the Tamron 70-300, which offers very good price/performance for a similar outlay to the Sony / Minolta 75-300, or the Sigma 100-300 EX DG f4 which seems to be fairly well regarded ( but is closer to the price of the 70-300G).

Good thing there's a limited lens selection for the Sony, or things might get confusing...
