I own 2 x Sony a7Riv's and I'm thinking of buying a New Sony 1.4x Teleconverter -

But, before I do I wanted to ask anyone with experience using theses with a Sony a7Riv and the Sony 200-600mm lens,.as the teleconverters are not cheap @ £475 ?

The reason I ask, apart from a waste of money - is I had one previously and it did not perform well on my Sony a7Riii :)

Thanks in advance

Les :)

On A7RIII you lose PDAF past f8 so at f9 with the TC you wouldn't have had any PDAF.

On A7RIV you go get PDAF till f11. So AF wise it'll perform better.

With the TC it's somewhat of a benefit at closer focus distances but at longer distances you lose a lot of sharpness at which point you might as well not use it.

I have bought and sold 1.4x TC like 4-5 times now!! It's not really that great with 200-600mm tbh especially on a high Res body like A7RIV

I just knew you'd would know- thank you- I'll spend the £500 on a new lens then :)

Thanks again

Hire one from lenses for hire and make your own mind up.
I did this over Xmas when they had the hire for 3 days and get 2 weeks free. I used it on my 200-600 and my A9. The weather was awful all over Xmas so didn’t get to use it much, but I saw no lack of image quality and autofocus didn’t seem affected

Depends what you plan on using it for IMO.
I've used a Nikon 2x on a 500 f4 lens to get way-off shots of interesting 'sedentary' species but I would never have tried fast-moving shots as the AF does take a hit.
If there is something that just needs that extra reach rather than expecting to do everything only bigger then I doubt you will always be happy - that having been said the 1.4x is the best option.

If it's possible to try the combo out, see what you thing of the results and other aspects of its performance. I use a 1.4x behind a Fuji 100-400 and it performs fairly well. Sharpness does take a hit but the extra reach is worth it IMO - your opinion might be different!

That's a plan- I never thought of that, Thank you :)

Wildlife/ Birds Roger - as always but as AF takes a hit, that would annoy me :) also I don't have as yet the 600mm f4 from Sony- still working on her who controls the credit card :) :)

Thank you Nod- I shoot mostly with my Sony a7Riv which is a full framed sensor @ 61mp- I have now programed a custom button on the rear of the camera.to switch into APS-C mode which gives me 26Mp and a 900mm focal length with no loss of light( as you loose 1.5 stops with a 1.4x TC and get 840mm)

The IQ is still good when I switch to the APS-C mode , So That may be a better option for me thank spending £479 on a 1.4TC

Image shot @ 900mm on the APS-C crop

Thank you everyone for the suggestions and input
