I'm looking to buy a second hand Sony A7Rmk3
mainly for taking pictures at the Mrs horse shows
so what lens would you recommend for this
there is a Sony 24-240 lens I've seen
or is there any other makes that will be ok for the a7r3
I am proper green at this and on a very tight budget
thanks
Gary

You generally find that long zoom lenses like the 24-240 don't have the same quality as shorter zooms like 24-105 or 70-200.
I use a 24-105 on my A7ii and it's a great all round lens, but my not be long enough or fast enough for your needs.

If the horse shows are indoors, you're going to need an f/2.8 lens in order to achieve a high shutter speed without a crazy high ISO. If they're outdoors and held in good weather, an F4 lens would suffice.

If you were using a Canon or Nikon body, then you could buy a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 lens fairly cheaply, but the Sony mount tends to be more expensive.

I don't know tbh
I just thought that the R would give better pictures as it has a better sensor
convince me otherwise lol
A7iii has better af and better low light performance.
A7riii has better resolution, which is great for portraits, landscapes or heavy crops.
The A7iii is usually around £500 cheaper used, so would give you more to spend on glass.

the R can shoot at 10 per second, that was my thinking
If you are looking for speed then:

1) A9
2) A7iii
3) A7riii

(I've ignored A9ii and A7iv)

I agree with @Bobsyeruncle that based on what you've said you want it for, the A7iii would probably be better suited that the A7riii

It can shoot at 10FPS but the view finder will be showing a ‘slideshow’ of the last taken photo. If you use H at 8fps it a live feed but with there will be viewfinder blackout.

If you ask these questions in the A7/A9 thread there are plenty of people in there to help you:

FPS is largely now bragging rights for marketing purposes. Very few photographers adopt the machine gun spray and pray approach. A sequence of 3 or 4 shots per jump is probably overkill - otherwise you just end up with 1000's of photographs to sort out.

Sony a7 mk 3...…..I get what you are saying and it makes total sense...….
now I don't know what to do lol

thank you all for the replies chaps
got loads to think about

OK. I'm a Canon man and other brands confuse me, but I'm sure others will chime in with their opinions.

Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS L - late model first generation. Yes, the Mk II is better, but its still a very good lens. £ 800
Canon 24-105 f/4 IS L - general walkabout lens. £ 350
Canon 7D Mk II - £ 635, or if full frame preferred 5D Mk III - £ 850
Combination with 5D Mk III £ 2000.
Prices from MPB, didn't choose cheapest version. Could do better on Ebay, Gumtree, Facebook or forums, but likely lose warranty. Other s/h dealers available.
Combination will take great horse photos, assuming co-operative horse and owner using sensible settings.

got around £1900 ish at the moment

That'll just about get you an a7iii and 70200 f4. Imo FPS is pretty important, I really want between 7-10fps to catch a good moment, 4fps is slow for action imo. I just sold my a9 which did 20fps and that really caught the moment but culling was painful at times but I just turned down to med/lo FPS on most occasions.
