Hi guys

I have just purchased the Sony a7riii, and used it at my first wedding on Saturday.

I was very pleased with the performance during the day time, however come the night time I could not get focus in the dark wedding reception using my yongnuo flash guns.

The af assist beams were not firing and after a bit of research it seems like the yongnuo flash guns are not compatible (even though I was wrongly told they were)

Two questions following this -

1. I need a good flash gun which definitely fires af assist beams / illuminator on a Sony a7riii with canon glass through the sigma mc-10

2. If there is a flash you recommend, is there a trigger you would recommend which allows me to take the flash off camera

I look forward to reading your answers

Gary

I'm surprised that the reception was so dim that your camera couldn't focus without an AF assist beam, but maybe that's a hazard of mirrorless AF. Back in old days of non-existent or pathetic AF assist beams I used to carry a manual AF assist LED torch in my bag. Not as convenient as good auto AF assist beams, but gets the job done.

The A7Riii is rated as able to AF at -3EV (admittedly with an f/2.0 lens), so I'm also surprised at the problems.
The AF assist is IR based, and built into the camera - so it doesn't use the AF assist built into 3rd party flash as far as I know.

Yes, it was a dark reception, however I do have dark venues I shoot in sometimes. It was just hunting for focus and couldn't lock on!

I have now found through research the F45RM is compatible with the A7RIII and the AF illuminator will work.
