Sony A7R5/Sony A7S3: Switching between FLASH and NON-FLASH settings

I’m using a Sony A7R5 and Sony A7S3 with Sony HVL-F46RM flashes attached to both.

When I’m working at an event I very often need to switch between camera settings for taking photos WITH an on-camera flash (Memory 1) and camera settings for taking photos WITHOUT an on-camera flash (Memory 2).

When I want to switch from one to the other I have to:

1 - Turn the Mode Dial from 1 to 2.
2 - Switch the flash off.

And to switch back I have to reverse that process.

I don’t like the fact that there are two steps in this process. I would like to switch between settings with the flip of a switch, eg to disable the flash when I switch to Memory 2 and to enable it when I’m on Memory 1.

More importantly though, there is one camera setting I wish would change when switching Memory, and that’s Auto Review. When I’m taking photos with a flash I ALWAYS want Auto Review to be on, so I can instantly see on the screen how the light from the flash has spread in the scene. But when I’m taking photos without a flash I NEVER want Auto Review to be on, as the on-screen photo is distracting, and I already know what the photo looks like anyway. But Auto Review appears to be a global setting, ie it can’t be assigned to switch on or off by changing the Memory. And so far as I can see Auto Review can’t be assigned to a custom button or the Fn menu.

This means that I often find myself doing this when switching from one Memory to another:

1 - Turn the Mode Dial from 1 to 2.
2 - Switch the flash off.
3 - Click MENU, click Auto Review, click three times to get to Off, click to commit, exit MENU.

Too many steps, and far too many button presses! By the time I’ve gone through all that I could have missed taking a crucial shot.

So, is there any way to make switching between flash and non-flash settings simpler, ideally switching off the flash and Auto Review when switching from one to the other?

I don’t know how the ‘memory’ settings work on Sony, but with Canon, everything that’s set when I commit something to a custom mode gets programmed into the mode.

So I have C1 set for flash shooting.

However, my camera is generally set to simply aperture priority if I switch out of C1, and I’d not wish to disable the flash globally. However I’m more inclined to just take the flash off when not required as I can’t stand the bulk where I don’t need it.

Thanks Phil. I need to switch between flash and non-flash settings many times during an event, and I'm trying to figure out the simplest way to do it with my Sony cameras. I have not yet found a Sony shooter who can describe a simpler way to do it than the process described above, which is not simple enough. Taking the flash off a camera is definitely not an option, as I can't predict when I might possibly need the flash next and I need to be prepared for every eventuality.

Assume you have tried saving flash disabled and auto review on to memory 2

EDIT Just tried and could not disable the flash on A7R V " this setting is not available...."

So far as I can see, 'flash disabled' cannot be saved to a memory setting - it is literally greyed out. And 'auto review' can't be saved to a memory setting because it is a global setting. If you are a Sony user and you've successfully managed to assign these things to a memory setting, please let me know.

Just tried to disable the flash and it cannot be selected, comes up with "this setting is not available as follows" then it shows whatever mode you are in aperture/shutter or manual.

An old post but issue raised on DPR

Might be worth asking in the Sony thread, but suspect options are just not available

It's so frustrating. I want to be able to switch between flash and non-flash settings with the turn of a dial or the press of a button. But as you've just found, that option does not appear to be available.
