I am looking for some guidance please on whether the A7R 1V in APS-C mode would give similar IQ to an A9 but with more reach?
I would be looking to use it with a Sony 200-600mm plus 1.4 teleconverter.

why would it? IT will be like any budget APS-C camera. But you retain slow fps and autofocus. Worst of both worlds. Then a teleconverter on a slow mega zoom. Not a great plan unless you just need A result

Image quality would be roughly similar given the difference between FF and crop performance on a small dense pixel sensor. Overall performance not so much considering one camera is designed around fast action and the other slower detail.

TBH I'd probably rather pick up a cheaper crop camera that's been optimised around that sensor size.

Hi, JMO but if you are shooting wildlife especially birds then don't go for the A7R IV, I had this camera and lens combo and found that 61MP is to much in low light, the noise was terrible, yes on a good weather day you can get a small bird at distance and crop those MP's but again JMO a camera with less MP's in low light wins hands down, not saying the A7R IV is not a good camera but not for wildlife more for land/seascapes.
If you go Sony have a look at the A7 iv, 33MP sensor Eye AF technology (human/animal/bird).
Russ.
