Which camera would be best for my needs?

There are a lot of lenses available for the Sony, it has great focusing & is water sealed

I like the form of the Sony

The Nikon Sensor is only 20.9 mp - is this a big issue! But the Nikon has the better processor

I am erring towards the Sony with the kit lens as I am sort of beginner (had an F50 20 years ago but want to get away from Iphone 15 pro)

my subject matter will be portraits landscape & general family stuff.

If you like the smaller form of the Sony, then that's probably the better option for you - as you say there is a much larger range of lenses available for the Sony (both Sony and many 3rd party options), which makes expanding your options later easier and cheaper.

Looking at a quick comparison of the cameras (I'm not that familiar with the Nikon) they look similar in many respects - the 20 Mp vs 24 Mp is probably not that much of an issue unless you intend to print large - for on-screen / web display both are well above 4k (8.3 Mp) so you won't see a difference there.
One thing I did spot was the battery life of the A6400 is rated as significantly better than the Z50ii. Hopefully someone who has the Z50ii can comment on that, but the A6400 has the same battery as the older A6000 (which I have as a small travel camera), and battery life is probably it's biggest weakness - I always carry 3 batteries so I have spares to swap to.
If the Z50ii is indeed that much worse, then that would be an issue particularly if you are interested in taking video.

Have you tried them in the hand? comfort will make you want to pick up the camera more - no point in buying something that is uncomfortable to hold or difficult to use in the way that you want to use it.
No I have not - this will be my next thing to do - I have handled the Sony but not the Nikon so I will do this

Many Thanks

I would say to try out the EVF on both cameras to see which one you prefer and also how the camera fits in your hand.

As an A6400 owner, the Z50ii will be a much nicer user experience. Twin control dials, better menus, subject detection. The reason (and it's a good reason) to go with the Sony is really just the lens selection. Plan out what lenses you'd want and if there's sufficient Z mount lenses.
